Speaking generally, I don't think the slowdowns and load times are caused by overheating. For that matter, I don't think the cause is slow hard drives either. It appears to be more a CPU utilization issue brought about by the way the game engine manages and accesses all its clutter that it accumulates over a play session.

I am holding out hope that Bioware will optimize some of this away via a garbage collection system or a patch explicitly to enhance performance for some CPU designs.

The Geforce 6600 GT named as a minimum is a bad joke on anyone trying to use that antique.  But the lowest possible screen resolution would be the only way to be able to do so.  Comparing the two VGAs, a sensible minimum, versus the OP's actual low quality card:

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

On four out of five criteria, it only gets 71% of the minimum card performance, and has only 57% of the bandwidth, so the 3DMark score is also low, at 60 % !

His slowdown differs from that of gamers with decent video devices.

And here is just such a decent device, for $63, after rebate, with free shipping!

This, the insane load times, and the CPU at 100% are all very frustrating and despite a couple months to fix them, so far I'm still suffering them as well. Well above the specs in everything but RAM (2 GB) on XP. Even still, everything runs great for a time, then later nosedives. There's no logical explanation about it being system related when it will play wonderfully then degrade over time given how many people are experiencing these same problems and how many of them are able to play other, higher spec games, on higher end systems with no issues.

I've had to shelve the game and I'm not willing to buy Mass Effect 2, any of the expansions, or any other Bioware (and therefore EA) product until I've stared at the forums for a long while to see if it's truly a stable game. I really hope they eventually resolve this and don't just ignore it or one day decide it's not worth the effort to fix any longer. Stop with the expansions, fix the core game please.

Edit: Admittedly, the op's card is in need of an upgrade. But be forewarned it may not resolve your issues. Take a look at some of the other threads about people stating they are having no problems, and see what cards they use. Even with a better card, slow downs, long load times, low frame rate, and so on could still happen.

I had some slow downs (p4 2.4ghz 1.5 ram hd2600 xp pro sp3) but I had to reinstall xp (after 4 years) and most of my slow downs are gone.

So far, my video card seems to hit 88 as soon as I start the game up. Not even playing...just sitting at the menu screen. I cleaned the entire case out today and installed a video card fan....all to no avail. Last night, my video card was running at 125 degrees Celsius. Not sure what's going on at this point.

All of the Geforce 7n00s are a minimum of three years old; in that time, the heat transfer paste has had plenty of time to dry out and turn to powder.  If the card was actually worth much of anything, the heatsink could be removed and new paste applied.

Your thoughts on the matter are very close to my own.

I am very tempted to just spend my game play time in LOTRO (high res pack, DX10 LOTRO) instead of finishing DA:O. I love the game, but the load times are sucking all the fun out of the experience and it gets worse as I progress. The Dwarven Area and Deep Roads has been horrible. I just started over for the 4th time, at least I can get some enjoyment out of the different origin playthroughs.

No amount of graphics tweaking and optimized texture packs has had an significant impact on decreasing the load times to an acceptable level. The best I've been able to do is delay the onset of the game's molasses factor by using some tweaks to free up some CPU resources, but ultimately the game gobbles it all up.

And, where is Bioware's acknowledgement on this problem? There must be at least 12 threads on this issue, many of the threads are written by very confused people, but they are writing about the same problem:

1.) Game slows down to a crawl after running fine for a certain period of time. Restarting game gets performance back.

2.) Load screens become longer and longer as you progress in the game. The Task Manager will even show that the game client is no longer responsive, but it comes back to life after you wait it out.

Just wanted to add my voice to say I've had the exact same problems, and my specs are far more than what is necessary for the game. It runs just as well on 1 core as it does on 2, but unfortunately that's not very well at all (after a few minutes of play, when restarting the game fixes the issue temporarily).  In addition, the movies sometimes freeze up and then skip ahead so I miss half the dialogue.  I'm also hoping for a fix from Bioware, as I love the game, but there's not much point if I can't play it... Very frustrating.

my game ran fine, no problems until the final set of quests. now the slow motion is almost unbearable! yet i can play an alt that's midway through and have no problems. so for me its seems to be something about the end game that's screwing up. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it, but nothing has worked thus far. I'm pretty sure it's not my hardware. Very disapointing.
