On a side note: I sure as hell hope Sten has Asala in the comics or DA3. That sword is just as much a part of him as his love of cookies, kittens, his role in the Qun, and whatnot.

OMG! Not to diminish your other contributions to this thread, but when I read ^this sentance, it suddenly occured to me...

If DA:O Sten is now Arishok, can we prevent the Qunari from invading the rest of Thedas with a peace offering of cookies!? :bandit: Shortest storyline ever, lol.

Might I suggest snickerdoodles? I don't know why, they just seem like the most diplomatic of all baked confections...

There's not even a guarantee that the Arishok (or even the Qunari in general) will be in DA3 at all. I certainly can't see them play a role in the events unless we travel to Tevinter and the Qunari think it's a good time to invade and destroy said country...

But the DA team doesn't seem to be above retconning a whole lot of things so don't expect an exception for this.

I remember reading comments from the DA producer saying he really likes the Qunari and would like to see more about them.

I'm willing to bet they're in DA3...especially if big boss man wants to see more...

Besides, I just can't see the Quanari sitting idle in this war...it wouldn't make sense...

This war should technically involve all of Thedas, whether they like it or not.

I agree. That what I didn't like in that picture. He was wielding similar blades to the ones the former Arishok had. I don't care much if he'll fight with two weapons (though I don't see the reason to not make him fight with one sword), but one of the two should be Asala.

Because not all Kossith are born with horns.

Those born without horns are considered special. They have a specific role in the Qun kind of like diplomats. They can go to other countries and they can "blend in better" so to speak.

Alot of people are arguing about this right now. But has there been any indication that the Arishok will return in DA 3?

The only way for him to live also means he loses the book when Isabella steals it again....so its pretty clear he has either failed his task or is dead.

Would love for Sten to show up in DA3 and if it's just the codex entry regarding leaving him in the cage that is the problem I actually wouldn't care if that got retconned (I am given to understand that you he doesn't die if you fall our in Haven, just leaves the party, never tried it myself).

Also agree that even if the DA2 'shok survived, something dire could have befallen him prior to a potential Stenishok appearance in DA3. Or hell, maybe he just retired after all that ugly Kirkwall business (Yes, yes I'm sure Qunari society doesn't work that way but hey).

I would love to see some Sten and Varric banter in DA3.

Bioware explained that not all Kossith have horns, and the one without them are respected/feared and have important roles. The kossith in DAO are either Tal-Vashot who cut off their horns or kossith without horns (the qunari in Sten's dream in the Fade).
If you want to know the biological reason, I don't know. A mutation, maybe, or a recessive gene.

I've put this together to clear up a few points about the Qunari.

How can Sten be the new Arishok if he is STEN and not ARISHOK? Qunari don't progress through ranks, they are taught to do specific things since childhood.

Because Sten wouldn't be able to wear a helmet otherwise. Yes, that's what Gaider said.

Sorry - could not read the entire thread. I tried but I gotta go do something else.

I hope we don't see much about the Qunari at all in DA3. Maybe a few here and there.

I prefer the story stick to the main emphasis: The Mage Crisis. Y'know - mages vs templars, the divine and some chantry subterfuge, Flemeth and Morrigan's part in (I assume) trying to conquer with or save magic. That stuff.

And once most of Thedas is weakened from all the infighting, then the Qunari invasion can begin . . . in Dragon Age 4.

I would rather not see too many things shoehorned in to DA3. I would rather see DA3 end as pre-expansion DAO did - a pretty much finished story. Then, if demand and budget warrant, bring on a new story.

So how did Sten change to receive a different role and why?

It makes sense from a game development perspective.

The irony here is most of the helmets were pretty dumb lookin in DAO in general.

If helmets were really that important, all they had to do was program the game so that whenever Sten equipped a helmet, it just did not appear.  It took me 3 minutes to come up with that solution.

How a GROUP of developers could not come up with that solution is beyond me.  Every individual misses things that are right in front of him/her from time to time.  But how nobody in the group said, "Hey!  I got it!" is kind of nuts.

He didn't. His role is "soldier"/"military." Sten and Arishock are just different ranks within that role (with Arishock being the highest possible role).

The previous Arishok died, leaving the post vacant. The tamassrans clearly felt that Sten had enough military prowess to warrent a promotion.

When I first read about this, I wasn't sure how I felt about it : of all the Qunari, how convenient that our companion from Origins would become Arishok. But it actually makes a lot of sense ; even though Sten likes to think of himself or present himself as but one Qunari among all others, this devotion actually makes him a model Qunari. Not to mention he helped defeat the freaking Blight and made it back ; surely, he became a hero of some sort on his return.

If you didn't recruit him on your playthrough, my guess is that even the darkspawn were kind of shaking and wtf in front of stoic caged Sten ; the emissary was angered by his defiance/indifference even though he was trapped, so he spat on him and ordered to just let him rot in there. Sten watched the village burn then stayed in his cage alone for several days, surrounded by corpses. Realising the danger the Blight represented, he swore to find his sword and report if freed. Since he was the only survivor, he was freed by humans investigating the attack, in order to be questioned. He answered their questions in his cryptic way and they let him go cause they were too ****scared of him. He strode back to Lake Calenhad and tracked his sword.

I may be wrong in how the Qunari deal with the rise of an Arishok, but I could imagine the Arishok in DA2 being killed in a duel or something by DAO Sten, and then Sten takes on the role of the Arishok.
