I may be wrong in how the Qunari deal with the rise of an Arishok, but I could imagine the Arishok in DA2 being killed in a duel or something by DAO Sten, and then Sten takes on the role of the Arishok.

A Qunari would never question their superior, they certainly wouldn't fight them. If anything, Isabela killed the Arishok in her escape, he died of old age or picked up an illness.

When I first read about this, I wasn't sure how I felt about it : of all the Qunari, how convenient that our companion from Origins would become Arishok. But it actually makes a lot of sense ; even though Sten likes to think of himself or present himself as but one Qunari among all others, this devotion actually makes him a model Qunari. Not to mention he helped defeat the freaking Blight and made it back ; surely, he became a hero of some sort on his return.

If you didn't recruit him on your playthrough, my guess is that even the darkspawn were kind of shaking and wtf in front of stoic caged Sten ; the emissary was angered by his defiance/indifference even though he was trapped, so he spat on him and ordered to just let him rot in there. Sten watched the village burn then stayed in his cage alone for several days, surrounded by corpses. Realising the danger the Blight represented, he swore to find his sword and report if freed. Since he was the only survivor, he was freed by humans investigating the attack, in order to be questioned. He answered their questions in his cryptic way and they let him go cause they were too ****scared of him. He strode back to Lake Calenhad and tracked his sword.

He became the Arishok because of this screenshot.

The Arishok didn't seem the sort to tolerate failure, whether someone elses or his own. If he survives DA2, it is as a colossal failure. He lost the book, attacked an allied city, lost the book again. He probably either killed himself or simply stepped down.

@EpicBoot Haha, literally yes, that's what it comes down to, seems like enough justification :)

Needs to happen in-game !

DA2 Arishok : This foxy human Isabela stole the tome from us a second time ! We need to go back to Kirkwall and burn everything.

Sten : Parshaara, that "foxy" human tried to pull some lame card trick on us back in Ferelden. In losing to her, you shame us all, Arishok. Step down or die !

The question is, how do you reconcile the Sten from Dragon Age Origins with the Arishok of Dragon Age 2? They don't seem to come from exactly the same Qun. We still don't know exactly why Sten killed the people who took him in from a Qun standpoint, or if the Sten in Origins was essentially Tal Vashoth.

I... think you're mistaken on many fronts.

There is only one Qun. Sten talks of Seheron -- his homeland -- and that homeland is under the jurisdiction/authority of the Qunari, who live there and in Par Vollen.

Second, Sten hates the Tal-Vashoth with a passion, for what they do to innocents. They attack and slaughter farmers, craftsmen, and smiths and he will relate the tale of how he and others ventured into the jungles of Seheron looking for a missing farmer, foreman, or whatever -- rank was irrelevant. What mattered was that a friend went missing.

Sometimes even people of the village would go in the jungle alongside Sten looking for any sign of their friends.

And for Sten's sword? He killed the farmers in a fit of panic, because if he returned home without his sword the Qunari would label him "Soulless" -- literally, as his sword Asala means "soul" -- and slay him on sight. To a Qunari, the item that represents their role in society is something they must keep with them at all costs -- something Taarbas will relate to a Hawke that returns the Lost Swords without want of coin.

On a side note: I sure as hell hope Sten has Asala in the comics or DA3. That sword is just as much a part of him as his love of cookies, kittens, his role in the Qun, and whatnot.

Has Sten not broken with the Qun by committing those murders though? Is Sten not a Tal Vashoth as a result of breaking from the Qun? Or is murder okay under the Qun?

He earned his atonement fighting the Blight - that was the entire reason he went with the Warden.  If you explore all the conversation options he flat out says he let himself be captured and sentenced to death.  He said helping the Warden would bring about his death as surely as sitting in the cage would.  He said in following the Warden he would find his atonement.

So no, no, and no.

Odd, considering Sten can't die.

Can't he die in loethering?

Isabela killing the Arishok...That's a good one buddy, you should be a comedian ....Also it's not confirmed if he dies, but most likely he does.

The codex says he "Most likely died" Plus the fact the whole codex is written in game so is not an authority on anything.

Seeing as this is one of the only big decisions you make in the game PLEASE do not retcon it. By this I also mean dont make some other reason why the old Arishock is gone despite our decision in DA2 as well. If we left the old Arishock alive keep him alive in 3. If we didnt let Sten be their. Please Bioware. There is no point in save imports if the games gonna retcon all my decisions.

Some things I can see. I could even easily see Leliana survive if the Warden killed her. But dont retcon BIG decisions like this.
