What will I be doing? Not what I want to do. Probably juggling Christmas plans between immediate family, friends, in-laws, and more. There's never just "one" day for Christmas - it's like you have to do Christmas several different times in several different places because of several different schedules. It's obnoxious.

I will be with friends of mine having a big lan party combined with movies about the apocalypse and beer and whiskey so if it is the end of the world we atleast end it good.
As for what will happen, it won't be the end of the world, it never would be, no-one predicted that. The end of the Calendar predicts the end of the current Age and the start of an new one and this will probably have a lot to do with the sun.
As said, scientist believe that the sun's activity will increase in the comming years and I believe the Mayans knew this as well (the reason why differs ofcourse). That each period of 5125 years was a part of a larger cycle of 25625 years, or a galactic day, divided in a day and night. 21-12-2012 will be the day that one galactic day will end and the next one will begin.
Because of the increases solor activity the Earth will change (switch polarity and other alterations in the magnetic field) which can cause massive earthquakes, tsunami's and volcanic eruptions.
Whether this also will bring forth a change in humankind, a next evolution of the mind, I have my doubts..

I like to think of myself as a logical thinker and fairly intelligent human being, but for some reason, and maybe it's my upbringing, thinking about stuff like the end of the world, true or not, fills me with supernatural dread that I shouldn't be feeling.

But some just don't want to accept something is going to happen ... too academic to even listen to geologists and astronomy!
It can be one or more of these:
1. Just overpowering sun and satellite problems (for few days)
2. Three days of darkness/lightness that can be very harmful
3. New Warm Age and the ending of Postmodern/capitalist world
4. Massive volcano, earthquakes etc. for some days (Catastrophic)
5. Vast theft, murder and rape in the world
