Bad Graphics

Kudos for the character detail though. It's pretty good...even though they're kind of expresionless.
I dunno...I'm not too much of a graphics fanatic, but I'm still glad I bought it for the PC.
Half-Life, WoW... *guffaw*

I'm playing a Mage and when I got sent off to the Harrowing I almost guffawed at how the place looked almost exactly like the last area of Half-Life (Xen something...). The textures for objects are subpar when I went through most of my Origin. I mean, it's like I'm play WoW...I was expecting a better than that...

Exactly. Character detail is amazing..lighting looks great too, but everything else texture-wise is old..and severely lacking..
Just look at this:

And no, this isn't depth of field..this is how most of the textures look..blurry and bland. I don't understand.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to see for myself to judge properly, but I seem to recall the various reviews mostly saying that the environmental graphics improved markedly as you moved away from the starting areas and into the more recent additions to the game world.
That's what people have been saying, but so far, NPC camp, Lothering, Ostagar, Kocari wilds..all suffering the same fate.

Well I myself, am comparing it to games of the same nature and it doesn't compete unfortunately..at least parts of it.
Obviously it is not going to look as good as Crysis etc..but the textures..come on..anyone who looks at the screenshot I posted and doesn't see bad texture..is blind..

Mass Effect looked amazing. Neverwinter Nights 2 and The Witcher both looked considerably better then this. Fallout 3, despite the kind of bland environments, looked worlds better.
The Half-life 1 comparison is exactly what I was trying to think of, the walls seriously look as if they were designed using the same amount of detail as those in Half Life 1.
But kudos on making characters not look like bizarre alien creatures, you can actually make a normal looking person in this epic RPG, one of the first times that's been doable and based on the miserable failures by previous companies, I imagine that's tough to do.

side by side comparisons of PC vs 360
the screenshot you posted does look a little low.. maybe a card issue? not sure, I am playing the game on PC and everything looks sharp and crisp

I am playing on Dual Core 3ghz, GTX 260 and 4 Gig ram. All upgrades are new so what kind of card issue could I be having...well not to mention that everyone elses is stating the same facts as me... ?? I would LOVE for it to be an issue that is fixable..but I think the textures are just that bad.

I'm sure the modders will jump on updating all then textures you find so horrible, then everything can be happy. You just need to wait.

Exactly..the textures in NWN were significantly better..and The Witcher, and ME...which is why I am so dumbfounded... plus the characters themselves look so good or at least decent..so why rest is so bad..confuses me.

I've no issue with the graphics. Could they be better? Sure, but then a majority of people wouldn't be able to run the game smoothly. I'm quite happy with them and think they look great for the type of game this is.

This is true, and I'm grateful to Bioware for providing the modding tools to make this happen. But it will undoubtedly be months if not years away until this happens, maybe by the time I'm ready for a second play through.

For those saying they are glad it looks bad, so they can run it..that's silly, thats why there are graphics settings..the ones with better PC's shouldn't be punished.

I love the graphics of BG2 (they fit the game perfectly). But when you put me in a 3d world with some gorgeous elements like the characters and some of the lighting, right next to walls straight out of Half Life 1, I find it very jarring.
I'm playing it at 1080p on a 50" screen, so maybe that's part of the problem. Obviously all of these things are subjective, but clearly it's getting to a lot of us so I wouldn't dismiss it quite so quickly. Loving the game despite this fact of course.

I am a reasonable person..not necessarily even caring about graphics. That just shows you how bad some of the textures are..if it has gotten me this riled up. It has nothing to do with being spoiled on good games. But I would like a game as hyped up as this, and by such a high class developer as BioWare..to live up to it's potential..and there's just no excuse. I apologize for ranting about it but it really has just upset me that much...which I can't seem to get past.

graphics look great to me, idk it must be your system.

Seriously, it's not politically correct to buy those games, it's EVIL. As is making them.
Well, anyway, I haven't seen it live yet, only screenies and reviews, but I'm not surprised. Area design isn't Bioware's strenght, only Obsidian did it worse, and Mass Effect had some washed out textures and the like too.I just hope it's not uninspired like Mass Effects empty planets or Garrus's low-res face. :-/

I suppose my biggest complaint is that the textures have poor detail; the characters are not bad, but not great. Stylistically, I find the game to also be a bit too cute and cartoony with overly warm colours, which is odd as it is billed as "dark fantasy" and from reading the novels I expected a gritty world. Instead, Ferelden looks a bit too much like something from a Blizzard game.
Still, I expected this much from the reviews that tend to say the same thing - great story, great voice acting, great gameplay, poor to mediocre graphics. I am very pleased with the game and happy with my purchase, but the graphics are holding it back from being nearly perfect. I suspect this is due to a lengthy development cycle on an aging engine.
Oh, and I am playing the PC version with the settings maxed at 1920x1200 on a high-end machine, so it cannot get any better than what I am seeing.
