Hail Grey Wardens,
While graphics are a matter of personal opinion for each person, we also have to look at the context in which the game was made; more specifically of this the engine, the genre and what it tried to achieve, and the fact that we are given the editor with the ability to create cut-scenes and areas.
You may notice many generalized movements and streamlines on characters that would allow any creation you have to make virtually any motion for cut-scenes -- and the ability to create areas in a way that resembles Never Winter Nights. The game play is that of those types of games: Never Winter Nights and Bioware's KotOR games with a new engine and intense battle upgrades.
If graphics were increased any further then many of the features we have would simply not be available in the content creation models; our area creation would be severely limited, as would our ability to create cutscenes and story in the fashion we are right now. While graphics are indeed a nice medium as someone pointed out, the way in which they were represented in this game fits perfectly with the context that was meant for the game.
Let us view the exact size of this game for once, as the box says you need at least 20GB free on your PC Hard-drive to install it. Just imagine what it would be like if graphics were any greater than they are now (which, in my opinion, they look gorgeous on the PC; the only thing that people might notice is the field of view -- but that is in par with the tool that was created for the game, and with us in mind in creating new content for ourselves), it would be twice that or more with all of the voice acting that was put in the game. We'd have fewer choices, a single generic starting point, expensive cinematic cut-scenes that players would not be able to reproduce, and the old feeling of KoTOR and NWN would be virtually gone.
In time players may issue out their own textures to be used, as is the case with many popular PC games, but most likely just on specific tree files and the like as many things would conflict or glitch with the immense freedom of usage the game allows us in terms of lands creation and generation.
The game is great, the battles are fun, and it will only get better as the near infinite content by such thoughtful and innovated people as ourselves develop our own stories and distribute them to their fellow Grey Wardens. I look forward to exploring in the lands you protect as a Grey Warden, and the people that rely upon you therein.
In War, Victory.
In Peace, Vigilance
In Death, Sacrifice.
