Can you guys provide us with screenshots so we can see what you're talking about? Aside from a few object textures, the game looks terrific to me, and I'm a self-professed graphics ****.

The last time i saw textures as bad as the wood-pile to the left was on an N-64. Even worse is that the lighting seems to be absent from the 360 version, there's no ambience to the lighting anymore and even on the PC there isn't much to begin with but at least it's there and things like that are CRUCIAL for atmosphere. The 360 Screenshot looks like a PS2-Game with AA.

I too am somewhat disappointed by the sheer uglines of some of the textures. However:

This is a game of substance, which means it will stand the test of time and will still be played by people 10 years from now (unless we are all blown up in 2012 :P).

Games like Crysis, which look absolutely gorgeous, will quickly become obsolete once even more advanced games start showing up.

I agree with the OP. The textures in general do in fact remind me of looking at the back side of a donkey, right in that crusty-craky part. With my(5850) I have eveything cranked up 8xAA 16xAF Max textures and shocked at how bad it really does look. IMO, a dated game like , dare I say, NWN2 looks better. Image IPB

BUT... I haven't had so much fun playing an RPG in such a long time I am willing and able to forgive this games graphical short comings. This game is already one of my all time favorates. I was never really impressed with Oblivion story-wise.(any of the morowwind series). This game takes me back to Hordes of the underdark, another one of my all time. Or maybe fallout 1.. yea it's up there with the greats as far as gameplay, story, voice acting, setting.

So in my honest opinion, I agree with everything that the OP says, the graphics are crap, but the gameplay far outweights it. I mean I played Zork and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. So, yea graphics arn't everything but come on... it looks like they just updated the KOTOR engine a bit.

The problem is that there in absolutely no bump maping, or any maping on any of the textures. it just lacks any depth.

I have everything maxed on my PC and while the graphics arent crysis level, they still have a certain depth that i love. Loving this game as well.

The op is right..the textures are very bad in this game...I was really shocked when I saw them. It's a shame because the PC's look great, armor look terrific. There are great spell effects and animations and awesome lighting..but then the textures on environments are just horrible.

I have to agree with this. I'm a person that still regularly replays games a decade or more old, so dated graphics don't bother me. What does perturb me is sloppy work. DA is very contradictory in that some parts are beautiful and superbly animated, while others are shoddy and horribly awkward. As the post I quoted brought up, the environments are the worst culprits; particularly the textures on certain objects. The average crate or door for instance seems way lower resolution than everything else and stands out horribly.

It really hit me how bad some of these textures were when I reached Ostagar and looked down at the forested land from a balcony edge. It had that tile based, NWN1 look, complete with the clipping I sometimes see from certain camera angles in that game

On more of a nitpick level...

I'm slightly disappointed with the female character model. Granted I noticed this in the character creator weeks back along with others, but it's a lot more pronounced to me when actually playing. It looks like the artists just tweaked a male model enough to make it female. The hands in particular both frighten and astonish me with their giant-sized weirdness. :P

To make things clear, I'm running DA with maximum settings at 1680x1050 resolution, so my PC is not the limiting factor here. This obviously hasn't killed the game for me, and it did look spiffy during certain scenes... but I can't help agree with those reviewers that gave DA's visuals a lower score.

I have to agree that the game looks like ass on the 360. That won't stop me, but it should definitely be better. Now somebody will chide me for being a graphics ****. I'm not, the graphics are just so bad it's hard not to notice. It won't stop me from playing.

Overall game graphics are fine to me... my only gripe is that hairs and robe do not have any kind of physics.

My guess is that the objects that you're looking at were some of the first created... about 5 years ago, when texture memory was at a premium. Newer stuff was created with higher detail and they never took a sweep through the older stuff to update it.

On the positive side, that means that the could (and SHOULD) update the older textures in a patch if they're actually expecting longevity out of this product. If it was a one-off, then it wouldn't happen. But if these textures are going to be reused for Bioware DLC and player DLC, it's worth the effort.

The characters are really stiff, when they bow it's pretty noticeable. Also what's pretty funny is the part Seagloom mentioned about nwn tileset, I got the same thing and it was extremely jarring.

Eh you don't have to be particularly demanding about graphics to know that Dragon Age doesn't look that good, it looks like 2005 or 2006 technology at best and doesn't even approach the limits of the X360 or PS3 (performance issues aside) much less the PC. Graphics definitely aren't everything, and I love Dragon Age so far, but it does deserve to get knocked in every review for graphics. Anyone that's telling you it's a visual 10/10 is sporting some serious bias or inexperience. If you start with a 10/10, you could knock up to a whole point off for visuals alone, plus a few other bugs and bad decisions (blood).

Still a fantastic game though, lets just not be fanboys is all.

All I require of a video game these days is that it lives up to 2007 visual technology, i.e. it looks as good as Modern Warfare 1, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc. Dragon Age fails that test.

im loving the game at the moment but im going to have to agree that some textures do look horrible on the PC version (haven't played the console ones). Like stacked logs in the background could easily look like they belong to xbox or ps2, I got a HD4870x2 with the settings cranked and the card settings tweaked and the game has its moments where it looks great...but some are just dodgy. I hope a texture pack or something gets released because its really the only complain i got about the game..otherwise job well done Bioware !!

I love the game and the graphics, though a little ugly at times, are not a big deal to me honestly. I am playing on a PS3 and am at about medium or so graphics compared to the high end pc players out there. Tbhe only thing that gets me is when you cut to a dialog cut scene you can see people jumping in and out of the background at random intervals usually one of the NPC's or your main character.

Was told in another thread that turing off Double buffering helped some people. I have an ATI 4870 and it helped quite abit. I 'm curious if this only Radeon specific??????????

You can have better graphics and wait another year for it to come out

Or you can play now with these graphics...

What do you choose?

Try shutting off Double Buffering in config utility.. I've a Radeon 4870 and that helped the fuzziness.

I too was extremely disappointed with graphics.

I was a bit disappointed by the graphics as well. Yes, story is the most important thing but as someone expressed earlier it IS a video game and I'd reckon that you'd want the game to look at least as good as your last effort. I'd say KOTR2 looked better than Dragon Age does today.

That being said, I was just slightly disappointed. The story has really been engaging and so has the voice acting (incidentally I felt the same way about Oblivion which of course looks about 23 times better than this game and likely 23 times shorter). All in all, if I were a reviewer I'd still give this game 4 outta 5.
