This is about BG2, but I'm writing it here because I don't want to get spoiled by checking out the BG2 forum. Yes, a bit weird, but I'm trying to keep everything as fresh as possible.

Have finished BG1 and maxed out XP, but when I started BG2 I noticed that Imoen started with less XP than some of the others. Why is that? Surely she should start with 161,000 as well, and not 135,000? Is this a fault somehow in my save, or is this normal?

You imported your character, not the party. Others start with pre-determined levels/xp. When you start BG2, you are given the option to import a save or a character file, but they amount to much the same thing.

I should point out this is from memory from a very long time ago. Others will confirm or deny this is correct, I'm sure.

Okay. Just found it weird because the other NPCs that I found start with roughly 160,000 XP, while Imoen was far behind.

No big deal though, there seems to be much more XP in this game compared with BG1, so 25,000 XP won't be a huge difference I reckon.

The above is correct and I’ll add one point;
    If you want a full party of like levelled adventures from the start of bg2 then you have two basic options; use the muliplayer interface to make a full party from scratch... once made you can then transfer that game to your single player save folder (same one you put the bg1 transfer) in order to reduce lag or you can use a mod called BGT to play the two games together as one long campaign.

Regardless of which way you decide to go... Imoen will still be a bit of an odd fish because of plot issue which will become apparent to you soon enough. :wub:

It sure did :(

Thanks for the clarification. Won't bother to start a MP game, I'll just continue with this one. Didn't even install UB this time, as I wanted to experience it as vanilla as reasonable, though I did put in a few BG2 Tweaks and the fixpack (with some recommended settings I found on GOG).

You also may have been looking at her mage XP.

6 levels of thief is 20k xp, 161-20= 141k, so 135 is barely below the BG1 cap. In my games, Imoen usually levels up inside the starter dungeon, but I don't even bother taking that level up.

When you meet Imoen again, it's not the same one. The game uses one of several brand new character files, so anything that existed on Chez Jon Imoen won't be carried over to the new version you eventually run into. As a consequence, all of the stuff she was carrying when you left the dungeon is distributed to the rest of your party, and any surplus is dumped on the ground near where the cutscene plays. There's a LOT of stuff to cart out of there, so be sure to check the ground for stuff.

You may have noticed "Imoen's Belt" being worn. The description doesn't list what that belt does, but it provides a comprehensive list of death immunity functions because of Imoen's plot importance. That won't be there when you see her again.

Enjoy Athkatla...while it may not seem as big as Baldur's Gate, it has far less..."fluff" areas. Almost every door you can go into has something important inside (but unlike BG1, it may not be there when you initially visit...BG1 had all of its encounters in place all the time...you could go into the underceller and kill Slythe and Kristin before your character would even know they existed. An equivalent quest in BG2 would have them not spawning until the correct step had been reached...saving Duke Eltan, for this example.)

40k thief + 95k mage = 135,000. While the others had roughly the XP cap of 161,000. Like I said, it was odd. Not a big deal, but odd.

Only read the first line in your post since my spoiler alarm went off, but I'll see how it turn out. In a game with a 8 million XP cap, 25,000 won't be a huge differential.

That you see Imoen again is really not a spoiler. It's the whole purpose of the game. I was quite careful about listing no actual spoilers.
