if you disregard the volus then it is 12 characters. 2 for each class. i do believe the volus is just to troll us
Chris confirmed that there are 16 characters:

It seems kind of weird that they'd leave each class without the same number of options though. Still I'm hype as hell and extremely excited to see what they have in sore for us. Hopefully the new characters will offer some new styles of gameplay with some exciting power options and touch power evolution choices.
Also some new guns that aren't just variations of damage, accuracy, and clipsize stats.
It's not new:
The Soldier class already has one more kit than the rest.
I'm also very excited about the new characters, up to date, all of them has some new element that makes you play a bit different than the rest.
And I really hope this dlc follows that trend.
Eh, there's a few classes that are a little too simmilar. Namely the whole update that introduced us to the Phoenix. Good characters, just a little too simmilar for my tastes is all.
As for Volus, I'm A-ok with them. ME3's multiplayer is just for fun anyway and people need to not get so bent out of shape. Would be nice to see another Salarian though I guess. If I could make the call, I'd limit the Volus to 2-3 entries tops to make them feel a little more special, but that's just me.
