Just something I thought about. How do you "realisticaly" stop a powerful mage? Gameplay aside, if we are going to go by the lore and cutscene rules. Say a blood mage that can make you cut your own throat, or spring huge fiery storms to burn down whole towns, or turn you inside, crush your bones with a thought.

Basically a very powerful mage. How are they dealt with? I haven't read a lot of dragon age litirature, only played the games, and in games it all goes by numbers and protagonist can beat anyone. But how do ( if say you are a templar ) realistically even approach someone who can make you a pile of ash in a second?

Yes templars can burn mage mana, and make then vulnurable. But what about blood mages?

Hit them with sharp objects. Probably arrows. Remember if we're going by cut scene rules, then they'll die in one hit too.
Sneaking up behind them and stabbing them might be an idea.
Or send in a bunch of peasants first to make them use up mana/health, then stab them
Or use other mages.

(Oh, and Litany of Adralla for mind control of course.)

As Duncan relates to the mage protagonist, a blood mage was killed because a templar cut off his head while he was distracted in combat with the other templars. We also have the historical account of Andraste and Shartan leading armies against the Tevinter Imperium, a nation of blood mages.

So basically mages are taken down by numbers and with heavy losses?

There seems to be something in Templar training, such as the use of lyrium, that makes them more resistant to magic.

Also, dwarves.

By surprise if its 1v1.

Lots of firepower, very little armor. A peasant with a butcher knife from behind would probably work just as well as a crossbow bolt.

1. Archers. Mages are still human, preferably archers who can sneak up on them while they're not expecting you.
2. Templars. Magic resistance is good. (Dwarves might also work?)
3. Cannon fodder. Make them waste their mana/blood.
4. Have a mage of your own to counter him with dispels/mana clash.
5. Lyrium-infused items that provide magic resistance.

There's always treating them like human beings in the first place. Stops rebellion before it even starts.

Since a lot of people seem to have difficulty with that concept, missile fire is probably your best bet. Anything living will die if you put enough arrows in it.

Mages have many spells which allow them to create barrier. I don't think one stab from behind would work, like if they turn their skin into stone.

Lock the door to their wardrobe. No self respecting mage would go out without a fresh pair of mage pants.

Hire ten Crow assassins who specialise in archery. Get ten experienced templars
ready to silence the mage. 1 templar should use silence then 5 seconds later another templar does the same thing and so forth. After the first silence, have all ten Crow assassins leave stealth, by taking one or two shots at the mage. Every time a templar silences, the assassins do one or two shots, until he's dead. Also, make sure there is an experienced Spirit Healer to support those the mage attacks.

<shrug> How did they lock Jowan in a cell? When a fireball would certainly be strong enough to blow a rusty old cage off it's hinges? Or how could any Templar tie up a mage, like what we saw in DA2? Couldn't they just burn right out of those? Not having mages be complete, supreme beings is necessary for story reasons, in addition to gameplay ones.

Although getting a Mage terrified and turn into an abomination seems to work great. Happens all the time in Kirkwall. Just a few instances of THAT happening behind the front lines of the Mage/Templat war and their own abominations would rip through their ranks.

grab his pointing finger and twist it back, than steal his stave or wand.

On a more serious note..uhm..most mages need time in game before they can cast another spell so you should time your attacks if the game is set to this. Ranged attacks are often good and another mage with counter magic of course.

A army of mages almost feel like an entire army of only artillery. Might be very impressive to bombard your enemies but I don't think a army of nothing but big guns would work, no military expert mind you. I mean what do they do if soldiers manage to reach the front lines? Toss a fireball at their own feet?

Also keep in mind that most mages are not trained in combat. In Dragon Age 2 the mages paniced and ran as soon as the templars showed up when they lay siege to the Circle tower.

Funny, don't think that first tactic works with the Tevinter Imperium, aka the #1 source of powerful blood mages right now.

like every thing else.
use the medieval fair fight approach. translated in modern English
make sure the situation is as much in your favor as possible

according to Murphys laws of magic.
magic works both ways
Ie IF magic work there must be enchantment that you can use that will give you enough time to do him or her ugly.
