In this post I detailed how I resolved my black screen lock up problem.  Part of that resolution involved overcoming an "error 36" when attempting to apply the patch to a re-install of the game.

I've noticed others in here experiencing the same problem so I thought I would detail a post on how to resolve it so others can find it easier.

The relevant part:

I also recommend deleting everything you can in the "C:/Users/'your username'/AppData/Local/Temp" folder...  Also delete any log files that may be in your "documents" folder related to the game. - this is above the Bioware directory.  If you have patched before, these logs may interfere with reapplying the patch to a fresh install of the game.  Deleting the temp data and logs will prevent the "error 36" from occurring when applying the patch again. (obviously I ran into this problem, one of many I encountered during this ordeal.)

So to sum up, delete everything in your temp directory, delete any dragon age logs in your documents directory, and reboot.

I believe the temp folder is hidden by default so you'll have to type in the full path.  Remember to put your windows username where it says "your username".

This should resolve the patching issue.

This works! Thanks a lot.

For those who are new to Windows 7, here is how to display the AppData folder that is hidden by default.

http://windows.micro...ow-hidden-files

Note: I hate to correct Microsoft on their own product, but the official Microsoft site says in step #1 to

Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

But instead you should do this:

Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start
button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Personalization, clicking Tools menu and then clicking Folder Options.

Instead of Appearance and Personalization, the correct option is simply called Personalization. They also forgot to tell you that you need to click on the Tools menu before you can see Folder Options.

Then follow step 2 and 3 of what is explained on the Microsoft site then follow Michael Suede's clear instruction and everything will be good.

Jimtp: no, anything in the temp directory is temporary (thus the name) and can be safely deleted. If any files are currently being used by a program, Windows won't let you delete them.

For anyone still having a problem with the patch this fix worked for me:

Look for a file called - designerscripts.rim

It should be located in your c:/program files/dragon age/packages/core/data

You can either move it to a different folder (recommended) or delete it, then you need to replace it with a new designerscripts.rim file.

As I had the digital download of the game I simply opened the .rar file and extracted the designerscripts file to the data folder, then ran the patch and it worked.

Apologies for anyone with the retail copy I am unsure how to find the file inside the disc as I do not own a hard copy.

I did what you said (with a disc-it's the same thing) and it worked. Thanks!

this worked for me, and is a hell of a lot easier than a lot of the other suggestions. Many thanks. Pisses me off that this is necessary though, as a busy person who barely has time to play DoA, I don't have time to scour forums and eff about with my PC.

Worked for me, too - thanks. Trouble for days with the 1.02a patch after installing Ostagar and the designerscripts.rim trick worked.
