I know it sounds trivial, but I'm saying my piece.
I love the look of the DAO avatars. They're sharp and crisp, you can see part of their armor to get a general idea of style, and you can make different facial expressions.
DA2's are way too zoomed-in, they seem really fuzzy and low-quality, and you can't make facial expressions.
There's a reason most people still use DAO's avatars. C'mon, Bioware, do it!
(As an alternative, go too far the other way, so that each progressive game gets further zoomed in, fuzzier, and harder to comprehend. The reasoning? Older customers get better avatars).

Well, they're not designed as forum avatars, they're character portraits for the game. Problem was that DA2's character portraits were small, so they're not detailed enough for the forum.

They could always import a view of your character that ISN'T your "portrait".
Granted, this may result in many pictures of knees.
