The only excuse they need for a retcon is 'we are developing the game'

I would be able to accept a "Varric played loose with the plot" reasoning for a retcon or two.

If there's a good reason why he might have lied, I might accept it once.

But overusing it would be lame.

He's a storyteller, he's bound to embellish.

While he may have been referring to Leliana, Sketch, when encountered, states "Take my advice friend: stay away from Storytellers, never know what they'll say..." I took that as a nod to Varric as well.

They don't need an excuse.

Instruction booklet.

Creating Hawke: Varric, our narrator, has told this story once or twice before. He has a certain way of remembering Hawke that er, might not be wholly consistent with the facts. After all, who would you find to contradict him?

That's pretty much confirmation that Varric embellished some things to be more entertaining to the player.

True they don't need an excuse to do it, but having the story you are playing be the story Varric told... it was brilliant. It gave them one, even when they didn't need it.

What would they retcon?

It would be fun if Hawke's relationship with Varric varies Hawke's reputation in III.
Friendhip sided with mages: Hawke was a hero who defended the mages
Friendship sided with templars: Hawke was a hero that defended the innocent against maleficarum.
Rivalry sided with mages: Hawke was a madman that assisted the blood mages with a promise for power
Rivalry sided with templars: Hawke was a opressive tyrant that killed all the innocent mages.

Varric embellished quite a bit, but I doubt they'd retcon the entire game - he may have flubbed on a few details, and maybe forgotten to mention some background stuff the group wasn't personally involved in. But I'm pretty sure the game will largely be canon in DA3.

Saavik: "You lied."
Spock: "I exaggerated."

Varric is a storyteller, not a liar.

They don't but they should.  A good writer writing a good retcon takes effort to make it jar as little with what was previously established as possible, using the "Varric fibbed" excuse helps with that.  Just slapping on a retcon is lazy, it's bad writing, and frankly I believe the DA team are better than that.

Varric mentions on a few occasions that he lies alot, and also calls himself a compulsive liar. He doesn't hide the fact.

I suppose that makes some things easier for DA3. Bioware can always say, "That's not a retcon; Varric just lied.".

Technically, it wouldn't be a retcon if, lorewise, Varric lied during his interrogation.

They could use this to explain Zevran's resurrection.

VARRIC: Yeah, I told that to Cassandra just to screw with her. I thought it would be funny, and I knew she would buy it. Zevran's demise is not known of by most people, but I knew!

I know it was due to a bug, but it would incorporate said bug into canon.

Events in DA2 never happened, actually it was Sandal who doing something with his "boom!" at the Chantry and to Meredith, but Varric cover up for Sandal because he's a Dwarf....

Edit : Sandal did say creepy woman keep staring at him in his sleep...possibily Grand Cleric and Meredith...so he do something about it...Posted Image

Considering how linear the story was and how all our choices led to the same results in DA2, I don't think we need to worry about it.

That would make more sense than most of DA2.
