But overusing it would be lame.

The only excuse they need for a retcon is 'we are developing the game'

While he may have been referring to Leliana, Sketch, when encountered, states "Take my advice friend: stay away from Storytellers, never know what they'll say..." I took that as a nod to Varric as well.

Creating Hawke: Varric, our narrator, has told this story once or twice before. He has a certain way of remembering Hawke that er, might not be wholly consistent with the facts. After all, who would you find to contradict him?
That's pretty much confirmation that Varric embellished some things to be more entertaining to the player.

It would be fun if Hawke's relationship with Varric varies Hawke's reputation in III.
Friendhip sided with mages: Hawke was a hero who defended the mages
Friendship sided with templars: Hawke was a hero that defended the innocent against maleficarum.
Rivalry sided with mages: Hawke was a madman that assisted the blood mages with a promise for power
Rivalry sided with templars: Hawke was a opressive tyrant that killed all the innocent mages.

Saavik: "You lied."
Spock: "I exaggerated."
Varric is a storyteller, not a liar.

They don't but they should. A good writer writing a good retcon takes effort to make it jar as little with what was previously established as possible, using the "Varric fibbed" excuse helps with that. Just slapping on a retcon is lazy, it's bad writing, and frankly I believe the DA team are better than that.

I suppose that makes some things easier for DA3. Bioware can always say, "That's not a retcon; Varric just lied.".

VARRIC: Yeah, I told that to Cassandra just to screw with her. I thought it would be funny, and I knew she would buy it. Zevran's demise is not known of by most people, but I knew!
I know it was due to a bug, but it would incorporate said bug into canon.

That would make more sense than most of DA2.
