I love the idea of a companion that, rather than learning about their personality through them, they're a blank slate and you have to learn about who they used to be from flashbacks or descriptions by others, to contrast to what they are now

A fleshed out tranquil character? Yeah, that'd be cool. But, remember that companions should know how to fight and tranquils are people that lost their powers with their connection to the fade, when they die inside the fade.
As fleshed out as a tranquil can be
you have a point about the combat however...Maybe a tranquil from an area that had darkspawn/wildlife to combat around the circle so the templars were like "We won't arm the mages but give the tranquil some bows or something"

Why?
Is there any reason or do we just never see it.
I don't see why they can't fight, you don't need emotions for that.

Or imagine, if one of Merrill's, Anders' or Morrigan's final fates was becoming a tranquil. Oh, I'd feel so bad for them!

They trained to be mages.
Not soldiers.
Take away their magic and they're useless in a fight.

I don't suppose there'd be any chance for a Tranquil Companion at some point (or maybe an npc one that lives in your home and does your enchantment?)

You made my day. Thank you.

If they were made tranquil in their early twenties and allowed to train in weponry in case the templars wanted to use them as extra against the mages.
Someone mentioned the tranquil secretary above, and that was totally creepy, and I'd totally love the option to have one

No, but you could push them in front of hungry monsters. It would save on rations.

when they die inside the fade.
I thought mages became Tranquil because they had a rune of tranquility branded into their forehead, and nothing to do with dying in The Fade.
Doesn't death inside The Fade just leave a body open for possession by demons?

Fenryll becomes tranquil of you "kill" him in the Fade.

It doesn't even need to be a combat character - I don't see why there couldn't be a party camp character that came with you through points in non combat.
E.g "You there, tranquil companion, we're going to storm this castle - once we breach the gates make your way inside and set us up an enchanting area and find out what you can about the mages here. We'll launch from there and storm the innner sanctum."
Well not that exactly, but you know, something where they can be useful without requiring combat.

It would be interesting if there was a line of quests working towards doing what was thought to be impossible, reversing tranquility.

Feynriel is no normal mage though, he's a Dreamer. Marethari made quite a big deal about that.

as camp enchanter/seller of magical merchendise, it could definitely work
