So I recently startd playing Dragon Age and I must say I had a lot of fun until level scalling just ruined my whole experience....

So her I am....in Ozemmar trying to get the help of th dwarves (I am level 15 at the moment)....and level scalling has been bothering me for some time now...

SPOILER

So I finnaly finish the final battle in the arena with no diff at all (on nightmare)....then I go in the carva lair and want do I notice? Evry single bandits uses scatter shots....I mean WOW just WOW...what kind of stupide design is this?

We are supposed to be a great hero that is powrful and all....but every single thug in the game can use all the same abilities as YOU?! WTF

I won't even start talking about Item Scalling...

Genlock using scattr shot..... and simple hurlock using last warrior abilities....

Why did they not encounter scale if they wanted to add a form of level scalling?

And don't start saying that level scalling is good for freedom because it is NOT!!!!

Look at the BG series....we had MUCH MORE freedom than DA:O and it had NO LEVEL SCALLING

This is just a stupide marketing design...again...

It a sham because I am playing the dwarf noble origin and I wanted to get the dwarves help last because I knew it would be the part I would like the most (story wise) but then you got level scalling...

The migthy Grey Warden who took down a dragon gets killed by 5 thugs!!!! WOW

Constant challenge is plain stupide!

List of why Lvel Scalling is an abomination to RPG:

1- Kills sense of progression (no immersion....it always the same level of challenge...)

2- Loot system is plain stupide...think oblivion with bandits wit hglass armor...well in DA:O it thugs with dragonmail

3- Leveling up is useless....it actually more intelligent to stay level 1....

4- A band of wolf is harder than a GOD DAM Elite warrior or hero

5- More, more and more!

WE DON'T WANT LEVEL SCALLING!

I am going to wait that tehre is a mod out there that eliminates level scalling so I can enjoy the game again....

P.S: Sorry for my bad english it not my first language

I would also add that a lot of polls on the net proves that people hate level scalling in general

I dont understand you (and everyone else complaining about that). In my experience the game becomes rapidly easier the more you level. On my first finished playthrough I had real problems on easy/normal when I started. But on Lv 16+ I played on nightmare and felt bored because it was so easy (except revenants and very few bosses), and mobs were no challenge at all. The scattershot spamming is stupid, I agree there, but most archers were still too easy.

BTW, there is a mod which changes at least archers not to level with you (no scattershot except on boss archers etc..) on Dragonagenexus. Search for Better Combat by Selea.

You are incorrect in a few of your points.

Leveling up is not useless, and this isn't oblivion where you could beat the game at level 1. In DA enemies have a floor and a ceiling regarding their level. If you enter an area and you are level 3,and the enemies floor is level 4, and the ceiling is level 8, the enemies would be at level 4. If you enter and you are level 11, their level would be at level 8.

Level scaling in theory is good, it is just a matter of implementing it correctly

Poor guy, he can't  post in the correct forums because he hasn't registered the game.

All ships found in these waters are presumed to be pirates.

So, here's the deal. As you play through, your individual character does meet progessively harder opponents. This is so that the game does not become easy and boring, so that you actually have to use the abilities that you gain as you level. As for immersion, any single Grey Warden does not encounter much that should break immersion because of this. In the case above, the character would just assume that there were tougher Darkspawn down in the deep roads than on the surface. If you fight some bandits that seem tougher than some other bandits, well then the weak bandits were just desperate toughs and the strong ones are deserters from someone's army or down-on-their-luck mercenaries. As you play, you don't see the weak ones so much because they are not stupid enough to attack stronger parties. You do see stronger bandits more because they are atracted by your party's obvious prosperity.

CORRECTION:  You don't.  There's a lot of people who like it just fine.

And frankly, a well placed slash or lucky stab will kill you, period.

There are so many incredibly powerful spells that make fights so much easier--sleep, waking nightmare, mass paralyze, mana clash. crushing prison. mass paralyze seal combo.

@ Tirigon: Thanks for the mod recommendation.

@ lorderon: I feel your pain. I, too, bought the game recently, mostly so I could play with the toolset. I'm getting my backside handed to me quite regularly (having never played NWN or BG). I wasted a bit of time trying to get to the tactical system to work, until I realized it either just doesn't work or I'm not doing something right. For example, last night in Redcliff village, I lost my entire party six times in a row - on the stupid "Night of the Undead" quest (where they come from the castle and attack the village). And that was on the easy setting . . . (of course, Redcliff village was the first place I went right after leaving Lothering . . . Morrigan hadn't leveled up yet and so didn't have a healing spell). Then I read on a walkthough today that this was an "easy" fight. Yeah, right . . .

I'm hoping the game gets easier as I learn more about it - but last night I was ready to just rip it off the machine.

I don't use any mage in my party....but it seem I should since we cannot progrss without one on high diff levels...Yet this game claims it full of freedom....what if I want to travel alone with my dog?

I think the original posters points are somewhat valid. I'm not a fan of level scaling and am of the opinion the game doesn’t do it particularly well. Struggling to overcome a gaggle of bandits in a random encounter shortly after dispatching a dragon doesn’t sit well with me and it's something I'd like the developers to think about when releasing future content. Sensible scaling of enemies can work and I know why it is sometimes implemented but poor execution can (and in the case of DAO does) take one out of the game.

That why I propose encounter scalling and not world scalling....so the challenge is where it is supposed to be

As if this game isn't easy enogth as it is would you rather have enemies die one hit and stand there saying kill me?. I don't get people who hate challenges, I love the level scaling.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you are playing the game on nightmare. If you hate how they can use the same abilities as you, how about you turn the difficulty down instead of **** at the game?

Say, you do realize that, in real life, wolves are powerful creatures who can kill people. A pack of wolves is actually tougher than a skilled human warrior.

What you're point? Level scalling is still a problem...not because of the diff....but because of what it is

So how come we can kill dragons and giant beasts....even if dragons don't exsist I think it pretty easy to say that if it would it would be able to kill 100000000 wolves.....so why in hell can we take down a dragon and also have problems with a 10 pack wolf!

This is a fantasy game...and an RPG...we need progression

This is not WoW, "Lordaeron of Azeroth" ... if you're dying to 5 thughs, whatever diff... L2P! My characters certainly do not... we are mighty heroes...over 400 hours gaming and zero death! (after I, the noob behind the keyboard, spent some 50 hours learning how to play the game) No bunch of archers with scattershot can take us down, no matter our class, no matter our party formation... we and our companions kick some serious ass... and we make great movie stars too! =)
