An immense wave of boredom hit me just from looking at those supposedly(because I have no idea how accurate they are) realistic weapon pictures.

I would really want more realism in designs of weapons! The end fight of DA2 with the templars sci-fi sword is the perfect example of bad taste in my opinion. The argument that realism looks flat is pointing at the wrong issue here. It is a matter of design and not reality (since that is a complete illusion in a game). It is like saying an Apple computer is flat because of its simplicity compared to a PC, NO; an Apple computer just looks so much greater because thought has been put into it instead of the classic design mistake of compensating lack of artistic concept with a clutter of effects, colors and over design. Another way of saying the same thing is quoting Da Vinci: "Simplicity is the ultimate refinement."
In other words maybe realism is just a way of saying more function, more elegance, more reason behind design, better taste, less is more, a great achievement would be how to design something simple and elegant without it becoming flat.
