Loot drops need to be logical.  Mabari should not drop gold nor anything dogs normally do not carry.  In general, I think drops should be lessened, with more loot being obtained in major quests (like from rich people) rather than an illogical ton of gold/high-value loot being found on street corners, etc.  Animals should drop nothing but their carcasses.... perhaps as reagents or materials for crafting.  Do darkspawn have a commerce system?  If not, they should not have gold either.

But it's common knowledge that the Mabari circulatory system is made up of currency...were you not aware?

Well you haven't played many Bioware games then have you?

Random loot system, as the name implies its random what drops when an enemy is killed. It's been that way since Baulder's Gate so I can't see them chnaging it now.

You mean your mabari doesn't carry around your inventory for you? I guess Ser Pawsworth is getting an extra lamb bone tonight, for all the hard work!

Barkspawn brought me cake once- and wine. (Now that I think of it, he has a better track record than the hubs :) Not so hard for me to believe he might've stolen someone's coin purse at some point.

Of course I know about the random loot system.  They could at least classify enemies by like intelligent humanoid, animals, monsters, undead...  and depending on that classification, they can only drop a subset of random loot.  Humanoids drop gold and weapons.  Animals drop animal hide or bones.  Considering they went all the way in creating a junk category and repetitive loot items, this one extra conditional statement shouldn't be too much work???  It's immersion.

Those of you who have played Sacred 2 know that your character frequently comments on things. One of these is the ironic: "I wonder where the animals get their gold from?"

At first, I thought this was about Varric gambling in DA2 with the dog.
I guess I was wrong.

Dog doesn't need coin. He can pee on a random tree trunk to gain an area buff and can even bs its way out of a sticky situation.....

If you played DA:O you would know that Mabari have a highly developed and sophisticated economy where the standard currency is human children

Well, it's not like wolf, bears, spiders and dragons should have gold in their loot. And I'd like to know where the High Dragon in Haven and in Act3 had the pieces of armour I found after I killed them.
I'd say that it's not a big problem. I'd prefer if Bioware will focus to not put the quantity of junk that was present in both games when we loot enemies or crates.

I think loot system in Oblivion/Skyrim is better, you kill a bandit you can loot everything the bandit have, armor, weapon, clothes, money...but still if you kill a mudcrab you might find a spoon in it....lols

Edit ; oh i forgot, if you kill animal you can only take pelt from them to sell

This is the way they did it in the Baldur`s Gate games as well. It was pretty much standard practice in rpgs, untill 5-6 years ago.

It's a well known fact of gaming that giant rats drop rusty weapons and armour. If that's what the rats drop, then other animals should have loot as well.

RPGs should contain a lot less looting.

That said, where do you draw the line on realism in drops and gear?  But why do enemies sometimes drop armor and weapons that they're not wearing?  And how does the armor fit?  Is the realism of looting completely handwaved in RPG's and something we're just accustomed to that thus doesn't interfere with immersion, or are there actual lines that the dog with gold crosses?

Me, I'm open-minded to loot being more realistic, but to really do that you'd probably need to make armor drops scavengable instead of lootable, making all wearable armor crafted--something you do back at camp after the mission.  And if you do that, the unique looks of companions automatically make sense.    This is getting near the research station in Mass Effect 2 though and away from the more drop-oriented style of ME1 that helped contribute to many saying ME2 was no longer an RPG since RPG's in their minds require lots of drops and inventory management.  So there's that worry.  There's also losing the ability to equip a shiny new set of armor for instant gratification right after you get that cool drop in the middle of a mission or as your party is gathered around a dragon's corpse.  In general there are things we've come to expect and that we like in RPG's that I believe are inherently unrealistic such as what loot enemies will have and how usable it will be by our party members.  And the dog with gold is just a more extreme example of this.

Do I think it can be improved upon?  Sure.  And I think your suggestion about restricted gold drops to enemies that could presumably have gold is better than the current system.  But we shouldn't overplay the immersion card.  All of these games are unrealistic with regards to looting and require our cooperation by suspending disbelief  for it to actually make sense.

The problem is that with the random loot you don't get what your enemy is carrying. But with systems that give you everytthing they carry as loot you have the problem of ridiculous carrying capacity.
It's just a matter of picking which appeals to you.

I dont think many petty thieves would dare to "pickpocket" a Mabari. As such some people could be using their Mabari to carry money or small valuable items.
