Also, what does a player do if they don't give a **** who wins the war? Dragon Age 2 failed to make a compelling case for either side or why the player should even care. I don't care about either faction. How am I going to enjoy Dragon Age 3 when I don't care about the plot?

Everyone can't enjoy everything.
I don't think that they are going to leave this stuff at least unspoken of. We will probably hear more about him, but id rather have more Qunari. The Arishok was pure awesome in DA2.

The origins of the darkspawn is a far more compelling story, and is one that already has a solid foundation. It also had people interested and wanting to dive farther into that story. Dragon Age 2 is as an about-face and forces you to go in the opposite direction, and manages to change direction a half-dozen times before the end.

This whole war between templars and mages seems like an idea used out of desperation. It's like the writers just didn't know what to do or where to take the story with Dragon Age 2. The game itself is just a directionless mess that ends with the player asking "why should I care about your ridiculous war?"

Couldn't disagree more, personally. I care so much more about the mages and templars fighting, and the buildup and results of that than I ever could about glorified orcs.

Given that the writers created a new universe, I am not sure the intergame narratives needs to follow one story arc. Yes, the writers do need to be conscious of event continuity, but I am not sure they are bound to specific settings/characters of each respective game.
In other words, I think the writers were not desperate for direction, but, rather, felt that the inquisition storyline would interest potential players.

Dragon Age 2 is such a goddamn mess. It doesn't matter who you side with, the outcome is the same. Nobody wins. Everyone loses.

Because it's so much more grey. It's not "oh no there's a bunch of Always Chaotic Evil Darkspawn coming everyone fight!" There are good points on both sides. Both sides will go to extremes to stay alive and win. The farther they go, the further away a compromise is.
Except for the fact that you end up fighting both of them anwway. There is no real choice in the matter. Yeah, it's so grey.
