Yeah, it's not that the Chantry forces Mages to stay in the tower to keep everyone safe. They lock themselves up in there because they are too embarrassed to be seen.

My thoughts exactly, I can even picture the revered mother saying 'you are not going anywhere dressed like that!"
"Templars lock this mage in his room, he is an embarrasment to us all!"

People forget that bad fashions exists see: backwards baseball caps, bell bottoms, parachute pants, leg warmers

Not every era is fashionable to the next. I like the non-traditional look of things, and that includes the hats. Let people mod things so that the game looks like heavy metal album covers or the next LoTR knock off but leave the designers alone to create something that has the virtue of being different.

I don't think mages should have hats at all -- they're bound to look weird. And fall off in the middle of a battle. Sure, you want to equip something in that slot for the attribute bonus ... but why not give them circlets, like in NWN2... or a wreath, or a Wonder Woman tiara, or just a feather or headband... I had a very cool Stetson-type hat in NWN2, boosted my charisma +5 but I more liked it because it made me look like a cool guy... I also think your romantic interest in DA should give you a ridiculous hat or necktie, and if you don't wear it enough they get mad at you.

I was hoping before DAO was released that you would be able to choose whatever armor or clothes you wanted and empower anything with runes.  A shame that didn't turn out.

the mages robes are pretty dumb. As an rogue we have the same problem just some standard armor with tiers. Warriors have nice armor sets and many unique sets like effort etc. Modders should really make some badass rogue and mage sets. /sign ^^

they should use the Myth II concept of Avatars or Sorcerors. link cause im too lazy to host image

http://www.freewebs....b70/w13pre1.png

Myth II has heavy influences of native american, and middle medival style europe such as longbowmen, kite sheilded warriors, loin cloth braveheart beserkers with claymores.

These are concepts of a brilliant game, dragon age pales in comparison to myth 2 in both game play, story and artwork

The get-ups in-game aren't total losses, but there's room for improvement without lookin out-of-realm.

This style what I like -- just black cloth and more skin.....  Since magic flows though the mage, any type of armor (or cloth) blocks it -- therefore, less armor / cloth means more spell power can flow which uses less mana. (Just IMHO)

^ I like that too.

I was a bit sad to see there was very little in the way of options for appearances. I have done my best to introduce variety by applying selected mods.

But as for whether any change will come before DA2, I very much doubt it - given, that appearance packs for a handful of characters is paid for DLC in ME2.

Seriously, I refuse to equipe certain gears (like that very long head gear) because they look ugly. Even if the stats are awesome.

I vehemently disagree. I like that mages don't look like some recycled Gandalf. Are some of the robes unflattering, sure but then again I'm not sure fashion is the first priority. They have fur and feathers because a lot of the mage stuff (like the Chasinf Robes) are from barbarian tribes.

They've built a world that at least looks somewhat distinct from Generic Fantasy World and that is a credit to them.

This.

I did the whole Trial of the Crows quest just to get First Enchanter robes. Though avernus's robes aren't bad for a blood mage (or even without, though better for a blood mage), and are the best looking robes in the game

It's not so much the actual fashion, it's that mages only have like 2 choices. I wouldn't mind the bird robes if they weren't the ONLY other type of robe other than the Circle robes. Even the expensive stuff, like the reaper garments or the witch's robes, are just the Tevinter robes with different colors, that really put me off. The hats look straight out of Star Wars: Episode I.

also, in their defence, the apprentice robes on a female elf look REALLY nice. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there.

Most of the problem is that the better a robe is as equipment, the worse it tends to look. The early mage robes look OK, but the sets like my avatar's wearing, not so much . Though I kind of like the collar.

And I'm with PatT2 -- a lot of the suggested gear in the thread is much worse than the existing gear.

I almost stayed with the Apprentice robes for this very reason. Indeed, I often simply select stuff on how it looks rather than how good it is statistically - if that makes me a bit of a bubble head, so be it.

It would be nice to get something good looking after a quest, even if the stat increase was modest. Some of us want to be dandies in a fantasy world.

I know Ferelden is meant to be a bit grim, like here in the North of England, but sometimes we like to scrub up and look our best, especially if that day is to be our last in the fight to save our land B)

Guild Wars has some great caster armor.  Its art style is entirely different from Dragon Age, but I wouldn't say no to a good ol' Mesmer masquerade in place of the fabric pancakes and gaudy mitres we have now.

It's pretty sad, that the only "robes" or mage outfit I found that looked good in the game was Morrigans. Everything else seemed to not fit, or be bland. The chasind robes sprite is ok, but very unfitting for a mage. Looks like I just took some rags off a person that was half the size of me and I had to rip/stitch it up to fit. Archon robes sprite is ok, but the legs look awkward for females. Not sure what it is.

The hats, makes me wonder what happened to circlets and things.

I'd love to see some good modded items, but have yet to see many.

I think the Mage Robes should be more practical. For the ones with armor protection, perhaps some light leather pauldrons and Gauntlets with a leather vest over the robes. There should definitely be a deep hood (without the little fluff on the back of the head). Who says you have to be completely unfashionable to kill darkspawn. Templar armor does look cool (except for the helmet part...my opinion) with the heavy plate and robe combination. I think Arcane Warriors should be able to wear Templar armor because it would kind of fit their style. Some other styles of Robe/armor mixes would be pretty cool too. Maybe a long jacket instead of a robe, like a black leather duster jacket covered in arcane symbols and with leather straps and pouches to hold the mage's components and various equipment. Hmmm...my ideas go on forever...accursed brain...There just needs to be more variety in the styles of robes and armor. There shouldn't be just two types of massive armor (Dwarven and Full Plate) or three if you include Templar armor (although it's basically just the second massive armor with a minor change). Bah...I'm going to stop here before I start writing an essay about this...
