I don't thin you're going off topic Broganisity. People who dislike a race in MP probably do so because of stuff like you were saying. They've put a lot of thought into this because they love the game.

It's funny because Mass Effect found a way of making us hate, love, laugh, grieve, and think.

I hated the Batarians.

I sympathized with the Krogans and Geth

I laughed at the character interactions (and MP Krogan Battlecrys)

I was upset when Mordin, Thane, and Grunt (Almost...but it still got to me ; n;) died.

And then I found myself thinking about my decision to 'destroy'. I thought about it for weeks, and felt sick to my stomach over the Geth. (so yeah. Was okay with it before extended ending.)

But you have to keep those thoughts out of your mind when playing Multiplayer as they can and will affect your thinking. I'm not proud to admit this, but I delibrately refused to help someone because they were playing a Salarian, back during the Demo/Alpha Release. Course I thought about it for a day afterwords and felt bad.

I only play with Geth squad mates if they are people I know. Otherwise, I just leave the lobby. The Geth are nothing but liars. Too many loopholes in logic. I'm proud to say that I do not support those who allied with the Reapers. For any reason.

by that logic you wouldn't play with humans seeing as TIM/Cerberus is all buddy buddy with the Reapers as well right?

as for me, I am getting out of here before the fire spreads.

That's what Synthesis was trying to cure. Probably why most folks hate it.
(Sorry to much storyboards)

Well to add to the topic maybe just having fun roleplaying a bit. A way to try to keep up interest, especially if the match is easy enough that you can play around a bit.

I don't hate any of them to be fair.

Sometimes I can be way too understanding.

Idc what race my squadmate is playing.

My only concern is that (s)he can actually kill enemies and failing that, knows to stay the hell out of my way.

I don't dislike a race in that I'll go out of my way to ruin their experience. There are some races that don't really appeal to me, like the Asari and Krogan, but that's just because I don't like the playstyles. Other people do, and if they want to use the class, they are welcome to, and I'll be there for them, but I'll never run around as an asari or krogan, just because I dislike how the class is played, as well as the actual character design.

However, if someone goes out of their way to ruin my gaming experience, or begins performing actions that will result in their death or the death of the team, then they should not expect any further support from me, and I sure as hell won't be leaving my cover and diving through three brutes just to get him up.

For people who work like a team, there's reviving, for people who don't, there's medigel. One choice is going to be sufficiently more expensive than the other.

Being racist in a fictional universe just means you are likely to be racist in real life. There is no divide. Claiming it's okay because the characters are not real is a flimsy argument and has no merit.

In the game, the soldiers can't be racist, because they need all the help they can get. Shepard convinces a Batarian against killing humans out of vengeance.

We can be better than this.

Interesting hypothesis. A lot of people are racist and don't know it. Dat implicit racism.

I dont' think I'm racist IRL. I just don't like Batarians because the only ones we've met are terrorists, slavers, or mercs. Bad impressions all around.

That's because you've only met Batarians who have travelled outside their homeworld, so you're getting a narrow view of their society. Bioware seems to have made some races pretty unlikable, for example are there any examples of vorchas being good in the series?

I'm guessing this " character racism" is exclusive to the Xbox community? Because I haven't seen anything like it in PC.

Exactly the point of this thread.

Why automatically assume it's exclusive to the Xbox community?

I dislike Geth players when I'm fighting Geth, because they scare me.

I also dislike human players who wear white when I'm fighting Cerberus, for similar reasons.

But really whatever. Play whatever you like; I could not care less what race other people play as. The only people I *really* hate are those that spout abuse through their microphones, like the piece of **** I played with this morning who kept saying how worthless all players but him were (London/Reapers/silver). If you are reading this, know I dislike you immensely.

What a bizarre issue. I've never even thought about whether I "hate" any of the races in Mass Effect - I dislike some characters, but it's not like we've met enough of any of them to judge the entire race.

Aside from all that, I only ever think about the other characters' powers and their effectiveness with the current squad setup.

Surely it's not racism, it's speciesism, or specism?

Racism is views based on our human racial differences as we see them, so within each species of alien there might be racism towards their own different alien species racial groups, but when we meet sentient alien species we'll need to define a new term. I'm sure many people who are racist will quickly forget those prejudices when we meet aliens, so there will need to be a differentiation.

I have a slight issue with Krogan, but that's more that the players of them commonly play them like 2 year olds. I have also never even touched my Geth kits, I just find Geth unappealing, I like their story, I just don't want to play as one.

Finally it's not true that people are born racist, those studies I think you are referring too did not prove that everyone is born racist, they proved that babies struggle to recognise certain things in racial faces they had not been exposed to, that is not racism. You can't take a scientific study and base your thoughts just on media grabbing headlines, they are often simplified or hyped to be entirely inaccurate statements of fact.

People throw the word racism out and around far too freely.

How is that any different from people hating Muslims because of some radical terrorists who happen to be Muslim?

You are writing off an entire species because of the bunch you've encountered travelling across the galaxy. That is racism.

By this standard, you should hate Humans because of Cerberus alone.

EDIT: And with that, I'm done here. This thread is too serious for me. Be well, everyone.

I used to be pretty uh, ... "dismissive" of Krogans. Then I actually played them and stopped being a db. I suppose it will add fuel to the fire that I just happened to switch from xbox to pc.

If they add volus, I'll simply leave lobbies when I see a volus. They're an immersion breaker for me. I can't take the game seriously with them doing strike ops next to a krogan battlemaster. While it's certainly possible to take the game too seriously, I find it much more fun to RP at least in as far as putting myself in my character's shoes.

There's really nothing immersion breaking about the volus. There's no reason they can't strap on some heavy-duty armor and shielding like any other race. We know the volus are capable of fighting, ME3 mentions they have warships and Din in ME1 will explain they do fight but they prefer to solve disputes with bartering.

1. Plenty of harmless batarians in ME3.

2. Mercenary isn't an inherently evil/criminal profession.
3. The batarian shop owner on Omega, Marsh, seems like a decent guy.

In sci-fi, race and species are largely interchangeable terms when referring to sentient beings.

I really don't have a problem with any of the races, shades of grey and all that. I will admit some of the MP characters I'm not crazy to see just because they're squishy and unless the player knows how to work them they will get downed a lot.

This is certainly an interesting topic. You can certainly see BW pushing to dislike batarians, it was shoved on us pretty hard. I was quite pissed at the batarians in ME3 when he was killing people cause they were humans, but I relized he was just lashing out after his homeworld was whacked. Lord knows we'd all be pissed if that happend to us. I won't get into a debate about the arathot desicion as I'm sure it's a hot button (for the record I did destroy the colony, purely to stop the reapers for a while longer as survival of all life in the milky way trumped one colony; at least to me.) But I was taught that just cause one person is a dick, doesn't mean that everyone is. In multiplayer I don't give a damn what kit you are, as long as you can pull your weight you can do as you please. Bad players can give a bad taste to some kits, but I try to chalk it up to inexperience (at least I hope it world be >.>)

And as for saying babies are racist, I find that highly offensive as a father of two. I don't care about whatever research has been done on it. Don't we all think it's time to move past such idiocies when we all have a hard enough time all doing the same thing? Just trying to carve out a life on this rock and raise our children to be ever better than us.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and sorry if I offended anyone. Certainly not what I'm going for.

Lol@All the people freaking out over the idea of people disliking a species and drawing all sorts of non sequitors there from.

Lokiwithrope

Well, if people actually care that much about playing with certain characters, that means Bioware did its job. They created significant characters people care about.

This times a million. Bioware designed characters to illicit emotional reactions, good or bad. It's quality character development. If you want bland, characterless John Doe/Mary Sues, go read Twilight.

That being said, there are several species in Mass Effect I dislike, and while I have no problem playing with them in multiplayer, I do crack little jokes about them and antagonise them.

Example, I dislike the Krogan, and one time we had a disable the widgit objective and a Krogan got to it first, so I said, "Someone hit that Krogan with a tranquilizer before he headbutts the objective to bits."

I think the Quarians are just boring, dumb, and full of bio-chemistry loop-holes (like the idea of Tali catching a disease that affects humans is ridiculous considering her DNA structure wouldn't even bond to human virus RNA and I doubt bacteria would affect her body much, DOH!).

Doesn't stop me from playing them even though I didn't hesitate for one second over choosing the geth. Not my fault their fleet is full of incompetent admirals, ridiculous objectives (seriously, if your homeworld is taken and the council offers you a new one its just poor leadership that dooms its people to floating in space and fighting a losing war with the geth, way to waste lives in vain), and in general they just fail at everything except making synthetics and machines that do what they can't (which is EVERYTHING ELSE). I mean seriously, what Admiral sends his WHOLE fleet against an enemy he has even a shred of suspicion of completly anhilating his fleet???!!!!

/rant on Quarians. I've NEVER left a teammate to die regardless of race. Racism, judgement, etc. have no place in war where every asset is necessary. :alien:
