The only Darkspawn I wasn't too keen on the facial changes of, was the Ogres.
Aside from that, the DA2 Hurlocks looked more like the talking Hurlocks from Awakening, instead of the generic Hurlocks from Origins.

Are you seriously saying the DA2 hurlocks looked like those walking piles of badassery that the Awakening darkspawn were? You're joking right?

Comparison time:

I guess they the chainmail headcover thing in common.

Only the chainmail there doesnt look like chainmail. It looks like either part of their skin or something plastered to there skin. Disciples had way more detail:

Origins darkspawn were always pretty pale by the way:

Its just you mostly see them in dark lighting for the big epic battles etc.

DA2 darkspawn are clowns. Not funny or scary clowns either.

It had to be a different art team. There's just no way they screwed up that bad. I refuse to believe it.

I add my vote for Awakening-style darkspawn as opposed to Origins OR DA2.

Granted, now that Corypheus AND the Architect are running around, maybe we'll see more of the scary ones.

Only problem I had with the darkspawn in DA2 was the "power ranger mook" dance they did and the big brim hats. The actual models themselves are fine.

I can get behind this. At least concerning the Hurlocks (especially the silly way the moved; sorry) and Orcs. The skinned alive look was more gruesome and grimy (read: aggressive and as Allister put it so well 'monsterous') than the pale rubbery skin we got in DA2. Legacy was a vast improvement.

I think since I realized beyond driving the Hawkes away from Loathering, the Darkspawn were really just a peripheral issue, I didn't really mind the way they looked that much.

Mr Laidlaw said they're going to be more like the DA2 darkspawn, because the DA:O look was too Orcish with the green skins.

Which I think is silly. Darkspawn are equated with Orcs because that's the role they play in the story. Turning them white just means they'll get compared with skeletons as well.

First post in awhile that's made me say "WHAT?!?" at my computer. Yes, the GIANT PURPLE OGRE is really reminds me of an Orc. They're not green. They have rotting skin, which is why I downloaded a texture mod to make the DA2 darkspawn look more like the DAO darkspawn.

DA II Hurlocks looked like clowns to me and weren't intimidating in the slightest. For the Ogres the pale skin didn't fit, but I prefer the Genlocks because to be honest they weren't much different from the Hurlocks in Origins.
For the overall look of their skin, Origins is way superior to DA II because the skin looks like rotten flesh. This I would like to see return.

I think they changed the look (along with other reasons) because they wanted to get away from the "hordes of mindless zombies," that DA:O gave off at times. The Hurlocks in DA2 were not perfect but they didn't look like a zombie want-a-be. The Emissaries and then the Genlocks in Legacy were awesome though and the Ogre looked the same but with a few color pallet changes.

I'll throw in for the DA:O/Awakening darkspawn. They looked more "tainted" than the DA2 clownspawn. Although I will say, the hurlock alpha in Legacy looked pretty cool.

If the darkspawn had new animations, wore full armor instead of pieces of armour, had new headgear (the chainmail hoods and the bolter's hats were kinda ridiculous), and if the ogre got back their old face (get rid of the derp-face by giving it a chin! How are they supposed to intimidate me when all I can think is "Hurhurhur! Gonna smarsh ya!*), then I think they'd look better than they did in either DA:O or DA2.

*Seriously, give the ogre a bloody chin! Even if it's the only change you make to the darkspawn, I promise you won't regret it!

I like the new Genlock designs and the Hurlock Alpha designs.

Just so this doesn't get lost in the shuffle

hmmm... I might approve of the new Hurlocks, but only if they had these traits:

1) More bloody, dirty, tainted, and less shiny white
2) Had different noses (some being torn or ripped), and have some who have the original Hurlock type nose
3) wore armor that actually looks like the original Darkspawn armor, or something that looks half-assed.
4) had sharp teeth again
5) had monstrous tattoos again
6) lose their hair. That made them look more like Uruk-Hai for me, so the hair needs to go.
7) appeared in high level of detail on all platforms.

and to go even further

For Ogres, they need:

1) Less mushed up face
2) Completely gray or completely purple
3) Soulless eyes
4) A return to the DAO teeth that they had. There is a difference between the two sets of teeth

For Genlocks:

1) Tinker around with the color scheme. Most people would like them to not be beige. Me? I couldn't care less about their color. I love the new design. The Genlocks in Origins were the only ones that needed an overhaul, and the new design works
2) Make the Genlock Alphas taller than regular Genlocks like they are now, but smaller than Hurlock Grunts. Or just make the Hurlock grunts taller than the Alphas, and the Hurlock Alphas are also given a height boost.

For Shrieks:

1) a return to the DAO style (color scheme and sharp teeth included)
2) drop the protrusions from the old style
3) move the ears down
4) give them a more elf-like body. Looking at the old design, they seem to have pointed feet, while the new design has more normal-esque feet.
5) make their heads more narrow and have less of a giant forehead.

In addition to all of this, armor needs to be worked on significantly. During and outside a blight/not being a Disciple, their armor should be half-assed for all types of Darkspawn. When the Darkspawn are a Disciple their armor should look... well... like it did when they were Disciples.

Laidlaw's twitter says they'll stay as they looked in DA2. Obviously they will be improved though. Hopefully that means better armor and animations.

Do you keep all these posts in some word document or something? You seem to always be able to dig them up whenever they're relevant :P

Oh, and @WelshInferno's post, that Disciple looks pretty damn scary.

Lol nah I just go onto google and look for them. I can usually remember the keywords that helps narrow down which thread it was in.

If the darkspawn in general(not the ones that where well received, the ones that where criticized) stay the same then Bioware is not really listening.

Yes genlocks and Hurlock Alphas DA2 look where generally received well, the other darkspawn looks simply where not and people have asked Bioware to go back to their DAO look. Boggles the mind.

I support the general change they made to the genlocks for Legacy, the Hurlock Alpha looked a bit daft to me though. Emissaries and Ogres definitely need improvements from their DA2 versions. In general, you should be aiming to inspire fear, not laughter.

Yeah, I agree with this thread. Although the DA2 darkspawn look fine and do the job, most of them (particularly the ogre), looked far better in DAO.

This right here, this is a big reason hwy thew Hurlocks need a massive redesigfn, either go back to DAO look, while not perfect did not make people laugh or create a look for them that will put fear into the player.

DAO's darkspawn might not have made me laugh but seeing an army of armored of zombies certainly didn't do me any design favors.

I preferred the DAO look - but what really bothered me about DA2 design was the putty patrol mannerism of the dark spawn.

In DAO they were these cold, evil creatures, lining up prisoners and slitting their throats. In DA2 they were "OMG EVERYBODY DANCE NOW LETS GET CRAZY AND WAVE OUR ARMS AND SLOUCH AND STUFF WOOOO"
