This is a super cool idea for a study, but think about just how valid the "conclusion" is based on the actual data.

Now how many people actually read the paper? Probably only a few. Out of the 7129 player sample, there were ONLY 1406 female players. That's a ratio of MORE THAN 3:1 Male to Female players, while the study claims that 40% of all gamers are female without a citation. The sample is nice but ONLY with respect to the Everquest 2 population.

Now if you think about the numbers alone, the fact that the average hours per week played is lower for males shouldnt come as a surprise, the sample is 3 times larger than the female gamers and is likely to include more players who play casually. Now I could go on about how the "conclusion" of the study is bogus and the sampling is poor but I have other stuff to do right now.

Basically all you can conclude from the study is that there are hardcore female games in Everquest 2 and ... not much else. Now had there been sampling on consoles (wii, xbox, ps2), browser based games (do people who only play flash games count as gamers in these "studies"?), and if the sample size had a similar number of females and males and the average hours spent playing was higher for females THEN you can conclude "female gamers are more hardcore". But such a study would require a grant that (probably) would be too hard to get and likely wont be done for at least some time.

In terms of the overall gaming population, especially in the console market I think this theory would fall apart, fast.

EDIT: I hope this doesn't come off as sexist because I'm just trying to say that the study was poorly done and the conclusion is in my opinion not at all representated by the data and this is being blown out of proportion.

The citation is Top 10 Industry Facts 2008 by the Entertainment Software Association.

And, they hedged their bets by acknowledging the limitations of their study and how it could be improved.  I don't think they were blowing things out of proportion.

I don't think your post is sexist at all. You are simply looking at the facts. The title of this topic is extremely misleading, considering it was just a study on Everyquest II players and not just gamers in general.

And honestly, who really gives a crap about how hardcore you may or may not be.

Um, they weren't studying "hardcore vs casual"

They were studying gender role and online gamer behavior.

Oh wait, I didn't even look at the DailyTech article reported on the study (I was looking at the actual excerpt from the Journal).

I see what y'all are talking about.

Yeah I agree, also I think saying someone is "hardcore" based on how many hours they spend playing an online game isn't really acurate, some people are there for goal-based achievements and to be competetive, some people are there because its fun and they want to screw around.

I'm sure people know when to quit video games after 20+ hours of sitting on a chair and developping hemorhoids and osteoporosis

You sure about that?  Have you taken a good look at that girl?

I wouldn't touch it with a hazmat suit on.
