I'd rather stab my eyes out than find myself with the cigarettes or any of the girls.

Buuuuut on topic... I can sort of see that, regardless of the game in question or the study itself. When I played WoW I knew a few female players, and some of them were in the top guilds on our server. From my experience they were very, very capable players. Not sure if it was talent or something feminine, but damn they were good.

This is a super cool idea for a study, but think about just how valid the "conclusion" is based on the actual data.

Now how many people actually read the paper? Probably only a few. Out of the 7129 player sample, there were ONLY 1406 female players. That's a ratio of MORE THAN 3:1 Male to Female players, while the study claims that 40% of all gamers are female without a citation. The sample is nice but ONLY with respect to the Everquest 2 population.

Now if you think about the numbers alone, the fact that the average hours per week played is lower for males shouldnt come as a surprise, the sample is 3 times larger than the female gamers and is likely to include more players who play casually. Now I could go on about how the "conclusion" of the study is bogus and the sampling is poor but I have other stuff to do right now.

Basically all you can conclude from the study is that there are hardcore female games in Everquest 2 and ... not much else. Now had there been sampling on consoles (wii, xbox, ps2), browser based games (do people who only play flash games count as gamers in these "studies"?), and if the sample size had a similar number of females and males and the average hours spent playing was higher for females THEN you can conclude "female gamers are more hardcore". But such a study would require a grant that (probably) would be too hard to get and likely wont be done for at least some time.

In terms of the overall gaming population, especially in the console market I think this theory would fall apart, fast.

EDIT: I hope this doesn't come off as sexist because I'm just trying to say that the study was poorly done and the conclusion is in my opinion not at all representated by the data and this is being blown out of proportion.

Don't see your comments as sexist at all.   Was thinking for it to be a real study, they would need to include a cross-section of different kinds of games...not just Everquest II.

I don't think Everquest II is at all "representative" of ALL the possible games you can play on the Net.   Yes I played that for a time ..as well as the original EQ for several years, amongst the many.

I am not too drawn to the Korean games, most of them look like they were made on an assembly line, spit out and left on the Net to collect money. :P

I have tried those..too.

I tend to like fantasy and sci-fi, have been in closed betas a few times,  been an interesting view from the inside out.

I am still hoping for a real good sci-fi MMO that will blow the socks off everything and anything else produced thus far....we'll see. :)

a question if I may.

why are there so few women in the gaming community? so few that they are given the special name: girl gamers. What is it about video games that does not attract women as much as it does for men? I would like to hear from the perspective of a human being with 2 X chromosomes

We spend more time logged in because we tend to chat with guild members or even socialize with the rest of the player base more than males. But i can only speak for myself, if it's the case of any MMO, i enjoy getting to know a bit more the person/s I spend time with (even if it's online).

On the other hand, I don't like to clasify anyone as "female/male gamer" when i speak about skill. We are all persons, and as persons we have the same ability to play games. Some might be better than others, but I don't think it's in any way influenced by gender.

My thoughts, anyways.

I'm not Feraele but I'll take a shot.

I don't know. I used to get lots of weird looks going into video game stores. I used to get even weirder stares based on the games I brought. I guess girls don't play DMC. I'm such a fixture now that I'm just one of the guys. They totally forget I'm a girl and I'm just a fellow gamer. Why do we have to have a special name? I think it's more men that came up with it than a woman.

Because of stereotypical people.
You could adapt this question in a million ways to anything like
Why in TV adverts is it always boys playing with race cars and girls playing with dolls.
Because thats the way the majority of people think it should be.

Because it's something that's marketed at men more than women, and because gaming is often seen as the domain of men and boys. Yeah, there's games out there generally aimed at women and there are women who play games, but it's mainly been a "man thing".
It's like volleyball and hockey; whilst there are men who do it, they're sports that tend to be played by females.

Perhaps those of us that do enjoy gaming are a little unusual? None of my real life friends play computer games...NONE. :D hehehe

I started out being fascinated by computers, and the internet, from there I progressed to chat rooms, got bored, progressed to online roleplaying, then to online gaming, been there ever since.

And I am self-taught with the computer...I am no techie, but I get by. :)

Actually...I think it is pretty cool how many girl gamers there are in general Hardcore or not. I was surprised actually when I came to th forums and saw soo many. I don't really care who is or isn't hardcore.....I just think it's pretty cool to see how many play.

what? hockey is clearly a male domain (its not just called hockey, its called Hockey and Women's hockey), and volleyball is equal between the sexes.

and what exactly is a game that is aimed at women? They must be doing a terrible job since few women play video games, or find unattracted to them.

but what is the exact reason? if I were to give madden 09 to a group of 100 boys, probably 90 of them would fight over it, but if I gave it to 100 girls, maybe 20 or less would even care about it.

Ice Hockey is a predominantly male domain.
The other Hockey is, as far as I can tell, predominantly female.

A game that's aimed at women? Well, let's see. The Sims will have a higher female player base than other games, Nintendogs, Cooking Mama (maybe!), Wii Fit (if you want to count it as a game)... There's quite a few, especially on the DS and Wii.

No. If you gave is Madden 09 we'd trade it in and buy something else....Madden sucks.

See there is stereotypicality on both sides. Is stereotypicality a word? It should be...

Actually..in the case of Dragon Age: Origins,  the inclusion of romance would more than likely draw more "girl gamers" ...for that fact.    Some of us are romantics at heart. :)

I liked that aspect, but I wasn't totally immersed in it..matter of fact I did that part of it mainly to get the achievements.    I am more achievement, goal oriented.    Currently I have 80 out 96 achievements, and just created my 20th character the other day.    So I play because I love DA:O...Awakening could have been a little more connected with Origins,  but hey no use crying over spilled milk,  it's a done deed.

I'll keep playing til the next expansion or sequel..."possibly" unless I am lured away by something else. :)

This can't be answered simply.  Guys and girls have different interests but alot of that has to do with societal gender designations and norms.  Advertising says a lot about who should like a particular product etc.  And these norms/stereotypes are often perpetuated by men throughout history but that is becoming less so.....I think.

I love Grand Turismo, and Warcraft 3. Girls shouldn't like them?

I hate FPS/TPS so I wouldn't play Halo 3 or GOW. Has nothing to do with being a girl.

I don't like to play sports games but I love watching sports.

You can't accurately just sum things up like that.

Basically what Eli said, but they're games that are not aimed at women. Yes, there are females who play some/all of those, but they're in the minority.

If you went across all the genres, I'd wager women would be more likely to play management simulations (Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims etc), RPGs (Dragon Age, Final Fantasy etc) and Puzzle/Casual games (Professor Layton, Bejewelled, Chuzzle etc). It's just the way things work.

I'm not even sure what Madden is...heard of it.     I try out new things from time to time.   Don't like civilization type games,  don't like hard hat and machine gun games.

Played Duke Nukem, and Wolfenstein however, back in the day. :)

Maybe I am just one of those people that don't fit the stereotypical pictures...of what females are supposed to be like and or like for hobbies.    I do other things, like genealogy research (five years worth..traced my family back to the late 1600's in England).   Gardening..I love that lol.

Portraits,  I'm a home-grown, self-taught artist...sold quite a few  and had some repeat customers over the years.
Challenger crosswords were my thing for many years, but don't do alot of that these days.
