I know this question has been asked many, many times. However, despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to find a defenitive answer. If I have my Warden perform the ultimate sacrifice, and then import into Awakening, what exactly breaks, if anything? If I then import that save into Dragon Age II, will it count my warden as being dead or alive? It's all very confusing. It's a big can of worms and I think I would be better off just having Alistair kill the Archdemon in order to prevent this mess, but I'd just like to get a confirmation on what the game actually records.

If you import your US Warden into Awakening, the game retroactively assumes you did the Dark Ritual and changes the flags appropriately. This was done so that players wouldn't be forced to replay the entire Final Battle to have a valid savegame for DA:A.
If you import that Awakening save into DA2, it will keep your Warden as alive and having done the Dark Ritual.
Unfortunately, if you want to import a US Warden into DA2, you must avoid DA:A completely.

I see. I'll just have Alistair sacrifice himself. Make Duncan proud, and all that. Thanks.
