*DEFINITE SPOILERS for Dragon Age: Asunder, as well as blatant TFH funtime theories*

Let me get this out of the way: I don't really expect this to happen, but I'm posting it anyway because title.

This is about Leliana, and her possible death, but possible retcon into existence.

We know from Dragon Age: Asunder that a spirit from the Fade can trick itself into believing that it is actually a human from our side of the veil.

The Gauntlet is obviously a place where the veil is very thin, judging by the fact that there are multiple spirits chilling there, as well as the fact that it is one of the most auspicious locations in all of Dragon Age: Origins.

Leliana could have been killed in the Gauntlet, and her body was either replaced or healed by one of the spirits there, and while the actual Leliana was dead, the spirit took her place, leaving the mountain shortly after the Warden and returning to the Chantry, blissfully unaware of the complexities of the character whose place she hopes to assume.

Due to her unflinching faith, her unique skill set, and her uncanny skill of networking, she is hired as the Right Hand of the Divine.

However, in Dragon Age III: Inquisition, the Leliana spirit shows its' true inability to comprehend the motivations of the woman she replaced, and attempts to undermine the Divine in her plan to reinstate the Circle of Magi as a less extreme and fundamentalist organization, feeding false information and sabotaging specific operations, all because of a shallow understanding of the person whose identity she has assumed, and letting her faith and zealotry come to the forefront instead of the compassion that Leliana could have been learning to accept during her journey with the Warden (who killed her).

As a result, she is much less mentally stable (spirits in such a situations have proven to have a penchant for murder most foul) as well as not reaching out to the "Inquisitor" for help in advancing the Divine's agenda.

This would somewhat solve the problem of Leliana's survival in DA:O, as well as nicely balancing the choice to kill Leliana in order to desecrate Andraste's ashes with the absence of choice later in the series, while making sure that both decisions are meaningful.

And before people start picking my little idea apart, remember that it's mainly tongue in cheek speculation. I fully expect Bioware to continue on as if no one had ever decided to kill Leliana, and I'm honestly fine with it.  Sure she's kind of sanctimonious and preachy at times, but I've never wanted to kill her. Plus the Reaver specialization kind of sucked.

Since I never kill Leliana, I never have to worry about this problem, but it would be kinda cool if they did something for the people that did try to kill her. I doubt they ever would because it would take more work then what it is worth to them. I wonder how many people really tried to end up killing her.

Vaguely. The pre-game books are pretty much established canon. The post-game books are from a certain playthrough(which one, we do not know). Many of the overarching events will of course be similar due to restrictions on how much the PC can change the world.
