My only playthrough I went with a Hexer mage, an archer, a board and sword warrior to tank and a two handed warrior or DW rogue for added DPS. On nightmare the game was mostly a cakewalk aside from a few areas and bosses.

There's really no way to lose with 3 mages unless you turn the monitor off or something...

Heh, even then I'd say losing would be a stretch.

The best class combos are the three characters you enjoy having around the most. At least for the first time you play the game :-)

Torias we all know mages are OP *even more so if you spec them all arcane mages haha* But realy you can do anything. 4 warriors *Hardest imo* 3 rogues + other *make rogues rangers for extra fun* or anything else the choice is yours and yours only to make.

One Arcane Warrior is more than enough.
Three Rogue Archers can be very deadly (Arrow of Slaying, Scattershot, Critical Shot).
I think the 'best' party layout would be:
Main character - Arcane Warrior & Blood Mage - Main Tank
Morrigan - Shapeshifter & Blood Mage - Damage Dealer
Wynne - Spirit Healer & Blood Mage - Healer and Damage Dealer
Leliana - Bard & Ranger - Damage Dealer (Archer)

3 mages makes the game very easy. Either make one of them (typically the PC) an Arcane Warrior tank or simply bring Alistair. AW tank is preferred because it opens up a Leliana slot for lockpicking and Song of Valor.
3 Blood Mages makes the game not just easy, but completely trivial and boring. Don't do it unless you just want to utterly pwn every non-boss encounter (some of the bosses require a little bit of tactical shuffling). Blood Wound is a truly ridiculous spell.

even with 1 mage, its already consider Ez-Mode in Nightmare at lvl 15 and above. There is really no point having 3, unless your playing with a chop stick controlling it with your mouth : P

Turn this on its head and make it a challenge!
Try 1 rogue for main char (DPS), plus lelianna on archer, Morrigan/wynne for magic and Alistair/Sten/Dog on tanking duties

Is that your party suggestion or just a bedroom fantasy
Is blood mage spec really that good? Tried it as a BM/AW spec for my mage and was underwhelmed by the BM skills.

I'm currently going with 2 attacking mages, a warrior and Shale.....only just got Shale so not sure if that's a good idea or not, but I'm not gonna bother with a healer because it's so easy and cheap to make a huge supply of potions that having one character play a healer is a waste of that 4th character.

I played through with my main as a rogue. Leliana (because I liked her character), Morrigan and Wynne. My rouge could hit non stop with momentum for 80+ per hit and he was more durrable than Alistair as a sword and board tank. With all of the extra skill/attribute points/talents that your main character gets he is pretty tough. I should note that since I ordered from Amazon I got the leather boots with 10% melee dodge and crazy ranged dodge. Add in evasion and I didn't need a warrior tank. Leliana or the mages could crowd control if something bad happened. The other fun thing about this setup is that I added pick-pocket into my tactics for my rogues and played as Wynne.

I guess you could play with three mages if you actually enjoy having Wynn around.
If by BEST you mean making the game's combat the easiest, then 3 mages + some other damage dealer (debateable). I believe Shale can outdo any remaining partymembers in combat utility and single target DPS, and is an absolute beast vs. many of the games more powerful bosses. He's low maintenance and requires very little micromanaging. Lelianna has some exploration utility, but tbh, you can always return to the map with a rogue to pick up all the locked away goodies - but here's a bonus tip: there's basically nothing worthwhile locked away in DA:O.

My ideal party.
Grey warden as duel wielding, arcane warrior with healing and destructive magic. (Jack of all trades)
A healer mage with some destructive magic.
A rogue who can use both archery and duel wielding trees and has ranger and assassin specialisations.
A sword and shield warrior.
Keep all party members alive and you have a balanced team that is prepared for all situations.
