I loved the way the did in Mass Effect 3. I played Maleshep for reference, the relationship wouldn't be the same for Garus and Shepard and Samantha Shepard had they been bisexual. Although I'm not sure if adding in more romances would take away from those that are already there, that said I didn't have a problem with the way they did it in DA2 either but it'll be interesting to see how they decide to implement it in DA3.

i'm gonna be so sorry for asking this but i must casue it just bugs the hell out of me when people say this
but  how the hell does him might being with a guy in someone elses playthrough take anything out of your relationship?
just because it's there does not chage the way he or they feel

You mean Shepard being with a guy? or Garus?  I wasn't talking about the sexuality of Shepard but of Garus and Samantha. Both are unromancable for maleshep, whether Shepard's bi or not doesn't matter.

I changed my post to clarify it

I did mean Garus or any of the npc romanceable characters for that matter

In that case I didn't mean to imply the realtionship would be better or worse, just different. For example a gay Shepard's relationship with Kaidan  would be different than it is with Garus. Or a straight Shepard's relationship with Liara would be different then it is with Samantha.

Kind of like how you have your guy friends and then girl friends, the relationship is different, not better or worse.

Do you get what I'm saying now?

Do you mean that gay and straight relationship with LIs should be different, but you don't mind that there is no gender restriction? Or do you mean that there should be friendship between LIs as well?

Lol, no. In short I meant that it would be nice if there were gay straight and bi love interests for variety. I was giving an example of the relationships my Shepard had with each of the companions and how they were all different. But some people may have hated all the companions therfore would of felt completely different.

Okay. But, assuming that Garrus is bisexual: as long as you aren't romancing him, is it really important that he is bisexual? After all, he and your Shepard would only be friends, and he would treat him as such. His attraction is something that only matters inside his own head. If you want to have a relationship were you and Garrus go shopping for sniper rifles instead of lusting over eachother's bodies, simply don't start a romance.

Haha okay am I confusing everyone on this thread? Here I'll give a real world example:

There's a Gay girl, a gay guy, a straight girl, and then gay girl number two.

First the relationship between the gay girl and the gay guy. They go out maybe get their nails done. Talk about girls/guys they think are cute, theres absolutely no sexual tension between them and they're besties forever.

Now the relationship between the gay girl and straight girl. They have lunch sometimes, maybe the gay girl thinks the straight girl is pretty but knows that they wont be together, thats okay she loves her as a friend anyway. They have a nice little relationship and are good friends.

And then the relationship between the first gay girl and the second gay girl. The both think eachother are attractive but they are just friends. Maybe something will happen in the future maybe not. For now they both have a very good firendship and will always be there for eachother.

See how all the relationships are different? They are all good relationships, neither worse nor better but just different

Who's on third?  The gay guy or the straight girl?  Is this one of those thinking exercises that I hated so much in high school?  Or are you trying to make the point that not all gay people are necessarily gay for all other gay people?  Because I would respond that all people are gay for the hero, especially commander shepard!

The two gay girls, my point was that relationships can differ based on sexuality. Certainly this isn't always true, but it was why I liked the variety in ME3

I would agree with it if all the LIs treated on equal ground. in DAO, Leliana and Zevran have nothing to do with the storyline while Alistair being king and Morrigan bearing an Old God Child has direct ties to the main plot. Usually, they would use the straight LIs in important roles because that would be what appeals to the mainstream audience the most. The LIs for straight PC would often be more numerous. I would love the option for more straight and gay along with bi characters, but if they treat them on more equal ground.

I'm sorry, what?

lol, that was pretty stereotypical, but I'm afraid to point that out since this thread may get locked for being offensive.

Of course not, were Shepard gay though and attracted to Garus then the relationship might be different.

For those who played Femshep, wouldn't you're relationship with Steve have been different had he been bi or straight?

I asked because in your earlier quote, you said that the relationships would be different in ME3 if the characters were bisexual.  But when you wanted to clarify what you meant, you completely left the possibility of bisexual people out.  In reality, they do exist, and have platonic and romantic relationships, just like everyone else.  It's just as realistic for someone who is bisexual to have many types of relationships in their life as it is for gay or straight people.

I really don't see the difference between a character only romanceable by one gender and a bi one. Unless they're Zevran you can't really tell their sexuality anyways. Maybe they're straight but the protag's overwhelming swag is..... overwhelming.

I can't speak for Ivey him/herself, of course, but usually people who say such things tend to view gay, straight, and bi people as being fundamentally different. So if a person is a gay, he would be a very different "version" of himself if he were straight. At least that's my guess. It's hard to wrap my head around such thinking.

I'm so sorry if I offended anyone on here, I didn't mean to. In my post I was supporting bi gay and straight romances but I think everyone misunderstood my post

no not really sexuality is fluid sometimes it just the person not the gender that matters

I didn't use bisexual in my example because there are already beisexual characters in Dragon Age 2. Had there been only Straight and Gay Characters I would be saying that they should make some bisexual. I'm not saying all characters should be either Striaght Gay or bisexual. I said it would be cool if they added a mix of the three like they did with Mass Effect, but if resources were too low I wouldn't mind how they did it in DA2.

If I get the impression, Ivey, (I quickly looked over this thread so I may have missed something), but in a nutshell:

You find it a bit strange/different knowing, even through metaknowledge, that a character could be romanced by both genders, and feel it helps strengthen the character if they are more established rather than reactive in how they respond to "the dating game" so to speak?

Because if that's the way you feel I just want to say I don't think that's a very offensive perspective so I don't think you need to worry about justifying how you feel :)

I loved both Traynor and Cortez, I thought it was neat that they had S/S exculsive relationships in ME3, it helped to make up for all the straight ones we had in the previous two games.

Yup, that's because all the characters are romanceable, it's just a matter of fact that  some of them are gonna story relevant.

I think that's how I was reading her response. And I like I said, it seems to come from the mindset that a person's sexuality is a very definitive part of who s/he is.

It's just hard for me to think like that since I rarely think of a person's sexuality.

I'm just confused why "Merrill being straight" is a stronger characterization than "Merrill is hero-sexual." She is still the same character with the same story arc.

Considering how many of their games have had s/s romances lately I really don't think you need to worry. I'm like 99.99% sure it will have it.

TOR, which came out last year, has no s/s romances.  It's still a possibility.  They could also do f/f only like in Mass Effect 1/2.

Not really, ME3 finally has s/s relationhip for Maleshep, but since it's a trilogy, people kinda miss out on the first two games. I was disappointed with the ME team for a while because in my mind, they only cater to the mainstream audience at the time. It's like if they want to play their character as gay, they need to stay alone for 2 whole games. That's the main reason why I'm not gonna get ME trilogy on PS3. I have a PC mod that allow Kaidan to be romanceable by Maleshep in the first game so having to stay single for 2 whole games just to finally be able to romance him again just take the immersion out of the game for me. I don't know if it's a petty reason for not wanting a game, but it's one of the features I look for the most in a Bioware game so missing it just reduce the replayability value for me. That's why as a whole, ME2 is better but I find it more enjoyable to play ME3 because ME1 and ME2 are not made for me, at least in term of romance. I hope it doesn't come off as bashing because that is not my intention. I'm just expressing my process while playing these games.

Yes that's exactly it!

This is why I liked Mass Effect 3 system. Just because Shepard was a guy didn't mean that Samantha had to like guys, same with Cortez and Femshep. But then there are also characters like Kaidan and Liara who like Shepard no matter what gender he/she is.
Maybe it is just me but I feel it made the characters seem more like real people.

Thankyou for helping me explain it :)

As I've said before, if they have the resources to do that, great. Otherwise, I prefer the all-bisexual system of DA II than the one DA: O used.
