I also don't care for Isabela. But that's because of what she does in Act 2. And you are forced to form some sort of relationship with her if you want her to be a decent human being rather than betraying scum. If she never did that, I would love her. She's fantastic in a lot of ways. And I love her in the comics. Act 2 just ruins that girl for me.

Overall I liked her as a character and she was a good love interest.

To be clear, I know Merrill is an adult.
However she neither looks or acts like one. She looks and acts childlike. So for me, that makes the whole concept of romancing her a little disgusting. It would feel like taking advantage of someone with a developmental disorder.
Merill is who she is. That she is a full-grown adult with a perceived sense of childlikeness does not change the fact that there is more to her than meets the eye. The apparent incongruity between her appearance and personality is exactly what sets Merill apart from every other character in the game.
A character has to challenge your expectations in order for it to be interesting. Merill is one thing at first, but dig deeper and you'll find another thing entirely. It also doesn't make the romance "disgusting" - that is but the fallacy of the young. In fact, I'd go so far as to say she has the most complex and well-rounded romantic subplot DA2 has to offer.
Regardless, if your insinuation is really all you could see in Merill's character, then... forget I said anything.

That "annoying character that never goes away" slot has been taken by Anders imo. He is the only one you have to help more than once.General User wrote...
My point was rather that, no matter what, Hawke still seemingly has to have a relationship of some sort with Merrill. You can ignore her for the entire game if you want... but she'll still be there. To my knowledge, no matter what one does, you can't get rid of/avoid Merrill like you can Sebastian, Isabela, and/or Fenris.StElmo wrote...

I remember that with Isabela and Sebastian you can just never talk to them, and with Fenris you can actually tell him to get lost. How do you get rid of Merrill?StElmo wrote...
I disagree. They are whining - you are allowed to choose your companions in DA no one is getting shoehorned into a using a character they don't like so I don't think they have any right to complain. As you said, people have different opinions on the characters and provided no character takes precedent, I honestly don't see the problem nor the need to complain.
No idea, but you don't have to use her in your squad, so get over it.
DA2 would have been a much better game if Hawke had the option to tell Marethari that she was going to have to take care of her little clan's resident problem child herself (or something along those lines). With the options to express similar sentiments for most of the other companions too, of course.

Merrill was my favorite companion character in DA2. Eve Myles was brilliant and her dialogue was very well written.

All the companions were adults, and the respective characters acted like adults. Flawed, imperfect adults, but adults nevertheless. It doesn't make much sense to vilify Merrill because she endorsed being proactive about the plight of the People, about the research into revolutionary technology that could make a difference for elves across Thedas, and for refusing to do nothing like so many people who did nothing while she tried to change the course of history for the Elvhenan. Even her use of blood magic is never abused to harm innocent people, and she manages to use magic proficiently for several years.

It's been a while since I started a new FemHawke, but I do remember having very fond feeling for Merril. The romance between her and FemHawke was wonderful and really one of the best ones I have played through.
It is quite ok if someone else has a completely opposite opinion from me. That is why we have several different LI:s and companions. Hopefully there is one or two that we like, but there might just as well be a few that are not to your liking. This doesn't bother me, for several games me and my rl-friends have had different fav-companions so I'm quite used to it. What one person loves another one dislikes. I'm hoping that there will be one special character that really speaks to me in DA3, and that goes for all players actually. You might not love all of them, but hopefully there will be one character that you really like.
I really like Merril, and that is fine by me. If you don't like Merril, well, that is also fine by me. Hope you had someone in DAII that was special to you. And may all of us get someone that we like in DAIII.

Nothing about Merrill was appealing to me. I had one playthrough where I kept her around, and I believe I may have hated every second she was in it. I dislike her character design. Is that because she looks young? Nope. I just don't like it. It's not my cup of tea, there's something about it that makes me dislike it intensely. I dislike her personality. People like her, arrogant, selfish, better than you are, types make me want to shove a fork into their eye. And those qualities go against her giggle giggle little girl routine where she acts dumber than she is to make herself seem less dangerous. Hey Hawke.. she's playing you and using her feminine wiles (whether it's in the relationship or in the naive damsel in distress way) to make you help her and her demon with the eluvian. I also don't like the sound of her voice. But her VA is good in other things.
I also don't care for Isabela. But that's because of what she does in Act 2. See, this is a reasonable (if a bit hateful) reason to not like a charcter. Not "I dont want to be a pedophile".
