Probably in the age where all mature women in the media MUST be buxom babes like Isabella, people probably thought Merrill was too skinny looking to be an adult in teh gamez.

Blame that on the elf redesign and unrealistic expectations of mature women in the media.

I'd much prefer more women in games to look like merrill then creepy childlike characters of Dead or Alive fighting games *shudders*

Nope. That's not it either. You don't have to be a one noted character that only talks about sex to appear mature. Far from it actually.

What exactly are you disagreeing with?

The bold. It's her personality first, that makes her a child. Not the size of her boobs or her beauty. The elf design is horrid though, but that is not the topic I think.

This. LOL. It seems like you didn't like a lot of characters from previous games :wizard:

Merrill definitely wasn't my favorite and got on my nerves a LOT but I wouldn't personally call for a "PLEASE DON'T PUT MERRILL IN THE NEXT GAME!" and yeah Jacob from ME2 was just blah to me..but again I wouldn't have asked to just 86 him or people like him. If anything- write better characters or make those characters better

I did not really care for Merril, but I decided that go ahead and romance her because I already did the rest. I found it to be my favorite romance of DA2(which does not really mean that much), but it did not outweight the rest of the game where I did not care for her much.

I personally didn't dislike her because I thought she seemed too young. In fact I liked her....at first. After my first playthrough of romancing her I could'nt bring myself to do it again. She seemed so sweet in a naive kind of way, but then she seemed so completely crazy I was just terrified she'd kill me in my sleep. So yeah....never again.

I don't understand how anyone could see her as too young. At the start she's got to be at least 19 based on her appearance and personality, which means she's in her mid twenties by the end of it. Hawke would only be a couple years older than her.

I love Merrill, she's by far my favorite character. I hope there is another companion like her. And make that companion as fleshed out as she was. I never romanced her until the end because I like Fenris and Anders' romance arcs more, but I would be be disapointed if I didn't have the option to have her.

It's how naive and sheltered she's been her entire life that makes her seem childlike to me. Physically and chronologically she's an adult, but mentally and emotionally she always struck me as too young to be hanging around Hawke and crew. Tried romancing her once, but she's just been a little sister to the rest of my Hawke's. It felt too much like Hawke was taking advantage of her.

My romance with Merrill became extra creepy during the quest where you find her in the alianage where she used to live. I remember telling her to go back to the estate immediately! Back at the estate she would just stand on the balcony - staring at nothing. A broken child seduced into a life with a dominating mean woman.

But its not childlike, it's part naive, part troll - she has her head in the clouds, tonnes of adults are like this, so I don't really know why its creepy to romance her. I mean, thats just her personality. She isn't mentally disabled, just a bit lofty.

Childlike would be quite different, anyway/.

There is no matter discussing this further. I disagree. She acts like a child for 7 years (be it trolling mentally challenged or whatever excuse). If it acts like a duck and so on...

Also, I am not saying they shouldn't add children to the companion roster. Variety can be good.

Meanwhile, back in kirkwall, Merill is working the bloodmagic and slaughtering feinds left right and centre. I think she can hold her own with the "gang".

If everyone thought it was creepy to romance funny merrill would she be forever alone given that is her adult personality? hahaha

I think because she is the same age as hawke and is clearly joking with some of her sillier comments, it's not as bad as people presumed.

I agree though, that if she was literally crazy or mentally disabled, it would be hella creepy, but she's not.

Adding children to the game is a terrible idea, shouldn't have kids hanging around the kind of stuff the gang in DA get up to!

And thinking she could prevent the demon from causing any harm and that it was just "helping" her was extremely naive, was it not? She got in way over her head and doesn't want to listen to reason if you try to talk her into leaving the mirror alone. When it comes to bloodmagic and that mirror, she has very childish expectations of what will happen and doesn't want to see the truth of it until it's either too late or you've made her angry throughout the game by not helping her with it.

Not necessarily. She might find someone else like her, or her personality might change as she grows older and more wise to the way the world works. See? There's still hope! :D

Hmm. Yeah. Children would probably just annoy me now I think of it. Merrill was pretty annoying afterall.

But perhaps Bioware could find a way to make it work somehow. I wouldn't abandon the idea entirely just yet.

I'm still playing the game so i haven't got to that part you talk about above.

But from what I have observed while playing, she seems like a fairly reasonable adult character with her head in the clouds and a welsh accent, played by an awesome actress. Also, I don't think merill is entirely naive, I think she is more kind hearted and inclined to see the world differently. She certainly wasn't designed to make the player feel creepy about romancing her, she is just a personality type you don't see that often in games about killing people. I guess.

She's not a child and she's not in any way mentally disabled or crazy - just a different kind of character. God forbid we have those in a video game.

I assume hawk doesn't trick her into sex right? If not, then

Nothing to see here, etc. etc.

Merrill is no child.  She's in D&D terms a "high intelligence, low wisdom character"  Like an absent-minded professor.  She lacked social skills, but was quite capable within her areas of expertise.  No she's not as agressive or confident as the other LIs, but isn't that what having a variety of option s is all about?

Well then, I'm glad I didn't go into more detail. Hopefully I didn't spoil anything for you! If so, it was unintentional.

About some things she is reasonable, but about others not so much. I like her accent, it fits the character. It's her lines, not the voice itself that does it for me. She is kind-hearted, but that's not what makes her naive in my eyes. It's her insisting that she knows better than every other mage in the world, whether currently living or in history, when it comes to blood magic and demons. Thinking she knows what she's doing is naive and insisting she's being careful despite all evidence to the contrary is childlike, in my opinion. Honestly believing that the worst can't happen because you're being careful is not a sign of mature logical thinking and has nothing to do with her age, physical appearance, or voice.

She's not a child and she's not in any way mentally disabled or crazy - just a different kind of character. God forbid we have those in a video game.

You keep saying that, but I didn't say she was any of those things. Just very naive and sheltered, which makes her seem childlike mentally and emotionally to me. That doesn't make her a bad character to have in the game. It just makes her one that seems, to me, to need more coddling and protecting emotionally and mentally than the rest of the crew. Not that she gets it, but that's not the point.

If you don't get that vibe from her, that's great and I'm not trying to persuade you otherwise. That's just how I feel about her. She reminds me too much of a little sister who isn't quite ready to grow up mentally and emotionally to see her as a love interest for any of my Hawkes. But then again, I still think of my real sister as being a teenager when she's married and has a child so maybe it's just my older sister "must protect the little sister" thing kicking in.

Yeh. I guess i'm just trying to say she has a different personality, I wouldn't call it "creepy" for people who had her as an LI, unless there's something I don't know about down the line - like hawk tricks her into sex :S

I think anyone who saw Merrill as a child and then proceeded to romance her (even if shamefully) has some serious mental issues...

(She was a nerd at best.)

I don't really have anything eloquent to add, I wish I did, except that I just don't understand the Merrill is childlike thing - based on personality. Nor the naivety thing.

I can honestly say that she's the first videogame character I could totally identify with. (Thanks writers, by the way, for that.) (I'm mid 30s.)

I always just saw Merrill as preoccupied, a worrier and someone who takes things like jokes/sarcasm literally, as default.

But, it's cool how BioWare characters are wide open to interpretation.

Thats a good way of describing her, she has heart rather then cynicism, she is like a hobbit.

what's so wrong with loving a satanic elf that slaughters her whole clan, wait never mind don't answer that.
