I dunno why people think Merrill is a child, its just the accent: www.youtube.com/watch

It has nothing to do with the accent (at least for me).  The way she acts to things, and good lord, I look like I could break her she's so thin.

But yes, when I saw how she was drawn ... I thought of her as a child and my warning flags when up.  Never romanced her ever ever.  Cute as a little girl role though to my female Hawke.

IF YOU ROMANCED MERRIL YOU ARE A PEDOPHIOLE!

lol, she's an adult, how old are you like, 30 or 40 or something? I assumed she was about 23.

I think people who say that may aswell say if you play JRPGs your automatically a pedo :?  cause you know, chars like Rikku, Yuna etc etc make Merrill look mature.

Fixed, totally agree. Posted Image

lol aw sum1 loves merrill.

But of course :P how can you not love the welsh accent, intelligence, innocence, positive outlook, charm, kind and caring nature.

But only pedophiles like that! No, if you are not a sick monster, you must love buxom sex objects or something with massive boobs and a dark personality!

Otherwise it is a child you sick freak! I don't care if she fights in battle, makes self aware jokes of her own obliviousness, has a huge intellectual prowess of certain magics and is probably just sheltered elf in an unfamiliar enviroment - she is DEFINITELY a creepy romance and BioWare should be ashamed of themselves.

/sarcasm.

People are very shallow in their analasys of characters in this series. If you want to complain about actually sick games, go ring up Japan and make a real statement about disturbing game culture, instead of picking on a weak misconception.

Some games translated from Japan is actually quite a huge offender with wierd and sick allusions in their games - it's one reason I don't play Japanese games. BioWare is not that kind of developer. They aren't making dead or alive, they are making a character that reflects many real world people.

I know people my age that are like merrill in different ways, its not an uncommon personality for an adult. People who play too many videogames just think dark + boobs = mature, instead of, you know, actual personality.

They are probably trolls, but its fun to mock their silly opinions. People gotta put this effort into getting those SOME Japanese games to change their wierd children obsession. Instead of, you know, picking on a valid, canonically adult and well developed character from BioWare.

Even if I was inclined to romance Merrill, I wouldn't.

It's one thing to be naive. It's another to still be that way after living in Kirkwall for seven years.

Merrill is so thoroughly detached from reality at times that I'm tempted to think she has some sort of developmental disorder. Most of Hawke's innuendos and flirtations soar clear over her head. I struggle to believe that she even knows what sex is. I could never romance her because I'd feel like a predator.

But I don't think that Bioware is going to just rehash a character they already did, so I think we're fine.

+1

Everytime I romanced Merrill I got the impression that it was Merrill who wanted to have sex more than Hawke did, and that might because it is Merrill that pulls Hawke towards the bed, so I got the feeling that she is clearly the one in charage in that scene. She is also the one that at least IMHO that wants to be more than just friends or be treated like Hawke's (new) little sister.

Generalizing all Japanese games and Japanese culture like this isn't much better, either. Now, excuse me while I go play some The Legend of Zelda...

Mhm. Though I prefer not to judge. As long as no actual people are hurt, it's hardly my place to tell people what they are or aren't allowed to play, read, write, fantasize about, whatever.

Yeah, that was a bit unfortunate. Particularly because the scene itself is really nice and romantic, but the odd proportions are... distracting.

A lot of people view Tali as being childish as well, and she also doesn't catch the same flak as Merrill.

The reason why neither Tali or Liara catch the same flak is that they both develop into more mature characters as the series progresses. Additionally both Tali and Liara had limits to their naivety even in the first game, and exhibit mature traits as well. Merrill on the other hand is almost entirely defined by her naivety and doesn't develop into a more mature character as the game progresses. Considering that DA2 spans a decade compared to the Mass Effect trilogy's four years, that is all the more damning for Merrill. To make matters worse she also has a character design that makes her look child-like, whereas Liara and Tali at least benefited from character designs that gave them bodies that looked like they belonged to adult women, rather than a pre-teen.

I strongly suspect that there's plenty of character development in Merrill that you either missed or chose to miss. I admit that she never gave up on the Eluvian project, but I hardly see that as damning. She remains pleasant in personality, to be sure, and many of her mannerisms are consistent, but that doesn't denote actual naivete; that's something you brought up yourself.

As for Merrill's appearance... oh no, she's both short and slim, and thus anyone who enjoys those traits is a pedo! Or something.

Repeating the same false analysis of Merrill's character doesn't make it any more true than it was the first time. Neither does repeating that she look like a child, which she quite simply doesn't. She has lage eyes. That's pretty much it. Lots of women have large eyes. She certainly doesn't look like any twelve years old that I've ever seen. And she's a more mature woman than a lot of people I know -- people that are quite defitely not children any more and certainly have an active sex life (and felt the need to discuss it during class...).

Funnily enough, I once had an art teacher built very much like Merrill -- a bit flatter, even, I'd say. She was at the very least in her late twenties and pregnant with her first child. So, yeah.

Difference is, Liara and Tali have the chance to mature over 3 games.

Merrill in DA2 is the ME1 version of Tali and Liara in terms of maturity etc. While DA2 does span a decade, we see very little that focuses on Merrills life as it progresses, unlike Tali and Liara who we see stumble and grow. Had we seen just as much content for Merrill, this may of well had a different outcome.

Tali's char design you don't see apart from a blurry pic, Liara.. looks very young.

Saying that, from convos Merrill has with others followers over the years, she clearly is no child nor has the mentality of one.

Naive to Human customes and culture, yes.

I liked Merrill, she was sweet and tried being nice to everyone. I saw the relationship as Hawke being about 5 or 6 years older than Merrill. I theorize Merrill would have been 19 and Hawke's 25 at the start so it's a mixture of young and mature love.

I like Dead or Alive =( While the women in it may have bouncy mammaries, they are all competent characters who are full of agency, they do not break down in tears and rely on men to solve their problems, they do not act like children nor do they have victim complexes, they hold some of the most important roles in the overall plot and they make up the female part of the most equal gender distributed fighting game cast in any fighting game I've seen - whether of western or Japanese make. Literally, bouncing breasts and general sexy character design aside, this is among the better representations of women in Japanese games.

*breathes out* Sorry, had to get this off my chest. You've brought up DOA several times now. Stop :crying:

Given that elves age slower than humans, I wouldn't be surprised if Merrill was older than Hawke.

Since Merrill was said to be the same age as the Dalish Warden, there was some discussion (a while back) about whether Merrill was actually older than Hawke.

I'd say Hawke has to be somewhere within 1-4 yrs older than Carver for that sibling rivalry
