Personally,
I think Dragon Age 2 was awesome, but there was room for improvements.
The way I would have done it if I had a say would have been to use origins like in the first game,
and replaced aveline and her husband with that new origin character, and I would
have had Bethany as a mage, carver as a warrior, and Hawk as a rogue,
and whichever type your player character was would determine which of
the three died, with the character of Hawk always being the opposite
gender to your PC assuming s/he survived the prologue.

Lets say you played a rogue, regardless of race. The Hawk character
would always be male then, but it wouldn't matter because he'd die
anyway against the ogre. The only reason I'd have Hawk be able to be
either gender depending on the player character's gender would be so
that no matter which playthrough you are in, you'd get one male and one
female.

Another option might have been to just get rid of Carver completely, or have him die, so that one male and one female was kept.

Another complaint that I had was every character being romancable by
either gender. I have nothing against gay relationships, but Origins
did it better with Zevran and Leliana, because in the real world not
everyone is bi-sexual or even bi-curious. Making every romancable character
bi-sexual just seems to make the game unrealistic in that regard.

I
also would have liked a few more party members and romance options too,
and I would have preferred for the game to feel much more open and
expansive/fluidic, with the ability to fast-travel from almost anywhere
to any place you've already been. There would obviously be moments when
fast travel would be unavailable, but like we could finish a task or
quest and go to the map and leave the area right away without any tedious back-tracking

Anyway, considering all the heavy restrictions in Dragon Age 2, I see
it more as a prologue for Dragon Age 3. In my mind, Dragon Age 2
should have been called Dragon Age 1.5.  As a stand-alone game I
give it a 7 out of 10, but as just a prologue leading into Dragon Age 3, setting the stage,
I give it a 9 out of 10. It's an excellent game and it's still worth
playing, but it certainly had room for improvement.

I like the whole
Hawke family, but I still think that they would have been better as secondary characters.

Anyway, I imagine if the player character escaped from the darkspawn
in various origin stories and met up with the Hawke family, and was
instrumental in saving them from an ogre, they might have been grateful and invited
him/her to stay with them in Kirkwall, and with some minor tweaking to the story would have still worked and been loads better in my opinion.

Also the game needed more cities (Like Starkhaven) and more buildings that you could go
into, and more complicated quests, like the gauntlet in origins.

Possible Origin Stories, just off the top of my head

Elf Mage -You could be the keepers second in your clan, and you are leading som hunters into battle against the Darkspawn to buy your clan precious time to escape from the approaching hoard.  Basically it would be ambush style, with you and three random elves at the top of a hill, raining arrows and spells down upon the darkspawn, with more and more gradually coming.  The battle goes on until your position is overrun, and you get a cut scene with your three companions getting killed, and your player character forced to flee, possibly by transforming into a bird and flying away.  As you return to your clan, you find that another group of Darkspawn had oberrun it, and many are dead, including the keeper, and if there are any survivors they are scattered and he have no idea how to find them, but you get a cutscene where it says you begin looking for any survivors, and journey north towards Lothering.

Switch to the Hawke family which is fleeing the village of Lothering.  (I would have liked to have actually seen the village, even if it was in the distance)  Here you would temporarily take control of the Hawke famile, and fight a few darkspawn and come upon an ogre.  A fight breaks out, and when the ogre gets almost out of life you get a cutscene where one of the siblings is Slain, and the other two are fighting it, and your Player Character shows up and saves the day.

Anyway, I would have preferred it if we had origins and different races possible, but as I said, it was still an awesome game.  I hope that Bioware will learn from it'ss mistakes and take it's time and make Dragon Age 3 right.  Sure, I'd love to have it in my hand right now and play it today, but even more then that I want it to be the best that it can be, so patient we must all be.
