From DAO:

- The armor system where the armor didn't become gradually worse with every level up. Same with defense, where an investment in dex is not  useless unless you keep spending points on dex on every level up (like in DA2).

- The wonderful and detailed journal. My memory is bad when it comes to games and such (I only remember scientific stuff really well). I had a hard time remebering what the quests were about in DA2  (you picked up a lo of quests t in the beginning of the acts while talking to everyone) and what choices I made during the early game and with different Hawkes. In DAO I had no such problem, since I could look it all up in my journal and I did so extensively. The journal contained detailed information on who gave me the quest and what it was about and when a quest in the journal was updated, earlier entrys did not disappear. The updates were as detailed as the original entries.

- Runes that weren't destroyed when repalcing them. I never really dared use the good ones in DA2 and when I finally did I found a much better weapon straight afterwards...

- Companions could use all weapon styles available for their class. I don't want story to clash with gameplay. I want to build my party in a way that makes me able to play the battles as I want to play them in each playthrough and at the same time I want to choose the comapnions that I feel my character would enjoy being around or companions I haven't used in earlier playthroughs.

From DA2:

Most stuff really since it is the better game in my opinion, but a few specifics:

- The battle speed, the battle style and animations, the wave system (so I can keep fighting forever and ever, since I love fighting in DA2), the CCCs, the more specialised classes and the new talent trees (but do remove the x points in tree demands for talents and no upgrades since the talents are kind of useless without them so they should be baked into the talent from the beginning).

- The story where there is no big bad and with the more personal approach of DA2. And please keep the "no golden middle ground" that was introduced with the game. I so regret choosing the golden middle ground choices in DAO, but they were hard to avoid since they were so very obvious. When I replayed the game I had heard from others that the other choices gave a better and more emotional experience som I chose the other options instead and it made the game much better. But I had to pretend that my warden was stupid to not choose the onvious "better" ways instead. The game really makes it clear that those choices will have the more happy outcome.

- The iconic look of companions. I like being able to separate my companions from my main character in the heat of batlle and I like it that my companions express their personalities in the way that they dress.

- The romances: all bi and more cinematic scenes (not talking about the sex scenes, but the questioning beliefs talks). Miss being able to hug and kiss the LIs whenever though.

- The side quests. Love how some of them formed their own story lines that sometimes were partly connected to the main story. They were more detailed than most DAO side quests as well. The fetch quests though belongs with all fetch quests in all games ever made: int he garbage bin!

- Better interactions with companions. Maybe less than in DAO, but with more quality. Talking about shoes with Leliana is not really as good as getting really personal with the DA2-companions. Like the heated arguments with Fenris or Merril and her obsession with her mirror.

- the graphic style. Not as generic as DAO and with more colors.

- More companion quests.

- The passage of time. It was interesting to see the result of your choices and not just read about them on a slide. Having Varric tell the story was nice too. For me it was perfect to see how the ending connected to the beginning of the game where Varric and Cassandra talk about the champion bringing the world to the brink of war. For me the ending was really fulfilling, since I always thought that that was really what the story was about.

Oh fun~
DA2:
  • voice protagonist
  • all bi LIs
  • combat animations
  • combat control in general (so much easier)
  • awesome dialogue
  • "cool" factor (Hawke was a pretty cool dude/gal)
  • kossith redesign (yes please)
  • better hairstyles, but I want even MORE!
  • CC lets me make a better-looking PC than DA:O did (for human)
  • non-raunchy love scenes
  • replayability (I've prolly beaten it 10+ times)
  • move towards gender equality in depicting characters
DA:O
  • length
  • able to chat with companions whenever
  • music (was more emotional than DA2 I think)
  • able to play as an elf (I accept that this won't be available for DA3 though)
  • difficulty (normal is comparable to hard in DA2)
  • darkspawn look (they are scarier than DA2)
  • elves' look
  • dwarven women... they exist!
  • can change companion armor
Both:
  • Great writing, awesome companions
Neither:
  • Lack of people of color... it's weird
  • emotionally gripping... neither game has made me cry buckets like ME has
  • horses *lol*
  • kossith women... I want to see them
  • explore more lands
  • great armor... some of the armor has been okay, very few are awesome (i.e. rogue champion armor), most are a bit blah, honestly (mage robes, generic heavy armor, etc.)
Woo I think thats everything :wizard:

You know the sad thing about this thread?

I feel like I really could do an entire wall of text about what Origins did well, what DA2 did well, and what they both did well.

I could honestly write that post.

But holy garbage fires of Antioch does that feel like such work right now! And on top of everything I've done this discussion before in the DA2 threads about what it did right and what it did wrong. I believe my voice has been heard as well as it could ever be heard by BioWare.

Really quickly for the sake of the discussion. I liked what they did with Legacy. Take that and bring back traps and non-combat stealth and I'd be a happy guy.

Yeah that's small but I think they know what they did wrong. And I think they know what they've done right.

Same game marriages are illegal in most jurisdictions. The two games could be civil partners in most places tho', if that helps.

Forget DA2. Throw it out the window as the utter garbage it was compared to DA:O. There was nothing improved what so ever!

There are certainly things in DA:O that could be improved: Less restrictive classes, more classes, combo-classes, more exploration, better skill/ability system, better skills/abilities, more non-combat skills/abilities.

DA2 was just making all the weak elements of DA:O worse.

Don't forget that they excised as many strong elements as they could.

Disturbing and abusive marriage where spouse gets locked in basement and never spoken again is sadly closest thing to a a healthy union   in any and all DA:O+DA2 relationships

DA2:
-A new type of story but better implemented (loved the politics and rise to power)
-Personal story instead of the stale save the world from ancient evil by joining group x and embarking on an adventure formula bioware has used since kotor
-Voiced player character (but only if it doesnt limit dialogue)

DA:O:
-Everything else
-Most importantly:
-More and more complex dialogue and choices (even more so than in origins preferably)
-Tactical combat but even more tactical and slightly faster
-Companion interaction
-General customization

The perfect marriage between DAO and DA2 is a divorce, with DA2 kicked out, never allowed to see the children and leaving behind only the hide helmet feature, the friendship/rivalry system, and a few other trinkets.

And DA2 taking away with himself also that one thing some people seem to like, the "Awww, how cool, you're not an important character in an epic, sprawling fantasy tale but just some guy who wants to mind his own business in a random small city!"
