Seriously though: that was some planetary scale BS.

I'm going to break with the pack and say - I was RIVETED by the Emily Wong twitter feed while I was waiting for the midnight release. I refreshed early and often, waiting for each installment to arrive. It was emotionally engaging, and when it became clear she wasn't going to survive, I *CARED*, much more than for all the faceless millions being killed and harvested. It was a great way to get the players engaged before they even loaded the game.
Now, if I hadn't heard about it before hand, I'd have been #$&*ed...
Exactly my thoughts. But as I followed the ME3 homepage and Facebook news closely as the launch drew near, the Twitter feed was kinda hard to miss. Was an exciting experience and emotional roller-coaster for me, especially since the launch in Europe was some days later and you soak up every bit you could get. It was amazing how many people joined in, made their own "Reaper invasion" photoshops of Reapers looming over their cities. You didn't even need a Twitter account to follow the feeds.
I completely agree with both of you. Whenever I replayed ME1 I always ignored Emily's cry for attention (I'm a little busy saving the galaxy, thanks) and I didn't really miss getting the chance to read her email in ME2.
However, reading her death on Twitter made her character that much more alive in ME1. Now, in ME3, after Shepard ignores her in ME1, it make him realize how much different on a personal level the galaxy is now that the Reapers have arrived. It is also why Shepard invites Allers on to the Normandy.

Think how much space could be saved by using twitter in the future. They could use twitter to write most of the plot elements and character interactions and leave the more important elements like shooting on the disk.
I know your joking, but you probably just described Dragon Age 3.

People don't care that Emily Wong was killed off on twitter... they hate the fact that the role of reporter was filled by someone who could at best be described as bad and out of place.
I'm offended by both things...

At the time people thought it was cool, something to hype up the game as we counted down toward release. It is only after we got a taste of Allers and her "acting" that people turned.
That is a good point.
Back before the release of ME3 when the Twitter feed was being reposted here, I remember most people being caught up in it and enjoying the series. They were shocked when Emily Wong died, but I don't remember raging.
I think you are correct in stating that people only soured on it after playing ME3 and finding out that Diana Allers were an awful character.

This post is a great example of why you shouldn't kill characters exlusively on social media. Most people who played the games, probably have no idea that Emily Wong died.
The Emily Wong Twitter feed would have been great, if the posted events had also gotten some mention in the game.
@Pheonix57
Here is the final transmission from Emily Wong:
"Alliance forces have not hurt Reaper ship. No damage. It's coming straight for us. Straight for ME."
"This signal, going out and being rebroadcast everywhere I think they picked it up. I led them here."
"To everyone I may have endangered, I am so sorry. I can only hope the information we got out is worth it."
"Trying to lead it away. Huge glowing red eye opening. No not eye, gun, it's firing."
"Airport gone. Eye is Reaper ship's big gun. Alliance ships hitting from behind, no damage. Jamming tech, many shots missing."
"Dr M taking us in. Our Reaper weapon might be only way to damage ship. Flying low."
"Oh god weapon not firing only had one shot were being targete72-r3."
"hit bullets from ground lots blood dr m dead hurts god im hit too."
"Van still flying. Lost a lot of blood. Not sure how long I have. Not sure QEC even still on."
"Reaper out in front of me. Lost pistol. Only weapon left is this skyvan."
"Fighter drones closing. Gunships are down. Mom, dad, love you. "
"Go on. Make your noise. Try to scare us."
"You want to see how a human dies? At ramming speed."

Sorry, I've been watching too much Gruen. As far as a one-off incident of a character being killed off on twitter representing some kind of horrible precedent...no, that's a load of horse-manure. These guys are good, they know their fanbase and they know what people like and they're not going to start killing off characters on social media as an alternative to gameplay content. This worked because it was a bit character we had little interaction with in the main game and who didn't have a role in the final product and it served to give her some extra depth and make her more likeable. They're not going to kill off, say, Garrus in the twitter feed for Mass Effect 4.

It sounds like Wong's death was about as good as Twitteritis can get (which isn't saying much). But seriously, not even mentioning it in the game? That's just silly.
So what we get is, on the one hand, BioWare clumsily trying to force an emotional response to the death of a complete stranger (who refused a direct offer of help, and is thus IMO a case of natural selection in action), while killing established characters we actually gave a **** about via twitter (Wong) and in-game email (Kal Ree'gar). Did it really not occur to them that Wong dying on screen could have a lot more emotional impact (on the player more than Shepard) than the kid we met five minutes ago who's too stupid to live?
The replacement Scrappy (Allers) didn't make things any better. I found her irritating and unlikeable, the least welcome character aboard any Normandy I've commanded. I'd rather have Samara back, and I hated Samara. For the record, that's without any preconceived notions: I'd been trying to maintain a spoiler blackout pre-release, and while I'd heard of IGN, I'd never paid any attention to them, so I had never even heard of Chobot until I got online after finishing the game.

As a marketing technique, this was really well done - using a prexisting character plays on the loyalty of the fans, said character wasn't in the game itself so they weren't hurting the story and the effect it had on the various social media sights where people were doing their own Reaper tweets and Facebook status' and so forth is a sign of the effect the marketing campaign and how it gained support from the target market.

Actually they've killed off everybody on the citadel a few times on twitter now.
