I made a thread a while back called "Thedas 9:40 Dragon" which covered everything we knew about the geo-political situation in Thedas as of 9:40 Dragon.  This time I wanted to focus on the Wardens.  Hopefull this one will be shorter :o.

I will present what we know of the Wardens as of 9:40 Dragon and I want to see where you guys think the Wardens will go in DAIII and future DA games.

The State of the Grey:
After the slaughter of so many Darkspawn in the Fourth Blight many thought they would never return.  As a result the Wardens, already few in number, went into a four hundred year decline.  The most severe blow came when, in the Storm Age, King Artland banished the Grey Wardens from Ferelden after their failed uprising.  It would be two hundred years before they returned.  The Fifth Blight, the first in four centuries, revealed how necessary the Wardens still were.  A new prescedent was set after this blight with the Wardens being granted the Arling of Amaranthine.  Warden-Commanders could now be nobles with vassals.  This sent a message that, Blight or no, the Wardens were still important.  The exact impact of this over the past decade is still unkown.

The Awakening and the Blood:
The Grey Wardens have interesting new allies.  The Architect, a sentient Darkspawn emissary,   discovered a way to free the Darkspawn from call of the Archdemon.  He did this through a modified Joining ritual which used Grey Warden blood.  The sentient Darkspawn, aka Disciples, split and fought a civil war between those who desired to free the rest of their kind and those wanted to return to the Call.  In the end the Mother was defeated and her faction destroyed.  Whether or nor the Architect lived is up to the player.  Based on evidence from Nathaniel Howe it appears that if the Architect survived he allied with the Wardens.  If he is dead it appears that one or more of his remaining Disciples do the same.  Avernus, Grey Warden and blood mage, explored further than anyone into the Taint that afflicts all Wardens.  He has found ways to extend his life unnaturally (but not stop his ears growing apparently :o) through the Taint.  If he is left alive his research begins to bear fruit a year later.  In his notes he reveals how he is suffering the Calling despite his best efforts.  In his dreams he sees the Black City and is convinced the answers he needs are there.

First among Wardens:

In recent years the First Warden (suggested to be a he in Awakening), who normally does not get involved in events outside the Anderfels, seems to be taking a greater interest in the wider world.  First he take steps, in the form of Woolsey, to help (and probably spy on as well) the Wardens at Vigil's Keep solidify their hold.  Second, the First Warden himself has ordered an expedition to the primeval thaig discovered by the Tethras-Hawke expedition.

Ominous Signs:
Even when we were a member of the Grey Wardens many secrets were kept from us.  As Hawke this is even worse.  Something has the Wardens concerned.  We do not know what it is and the Warden's are not exactly forthcoming with answers.  We know from a Grey Warden Alistair that there are events outside Kirkwall that, to the Wardens, are of far greater importance than the Qunari attack.  We know from the Grey Warden Stroud that something in Orlais is connected to these concerns.  Whether or not this is tied in with the Grey Warden expedition to the primeval thaig is unkown.  Another concern which may be linked is that despite the assurances of the Architect (or his Disciple/s) the Deep Roads are not clearing.

This is the Grey Wardens as they stand in 9:40 Dragon.  I want to see where you guys think (based upon all the information available) the Grey Wardens will go in DAIII and future DA games.

If you see anything that is wrong or missing let me know and I will see about adding it.
