Since we have a post about Merrill  and Anders. I figured Fenris deserves one too.

He whined and bellowed just as much as Anders did but most of the fans excuse it.

He was horribly malicious to Merrill.

I think his viciousness towards Merrill was the reason I came to dislike him. I did kill Danarius though. I may have disliked the character but I couldn't send him back to Danarius.

I did not expect to like Fenris in DA2. But in the end, he suprised me. His views are rather extreme (Anders' polar opposite, really) but he also did a good job at illustrating the dark side of mages. I ended up really liking his character, ridiculous though he looked (big props to his VA though)

Still can't help but rival him, even when siding with the templars though...

He was my favorite character as far as combat mechanics went, but yes, I quickly learned to just escape through dialogue every time he decided to open his mouth.

Personally, I don't think that Fenris deserves any of the hate that he gets from the fans.  The fact that he tell these mage loving sheeple the truth does not make him emo or a whiner.

There is nothing wrong with Fenris. He is not emo. He is a ex slave who has issues with mages cause of his ex master. That doesn't mean he is emo. He's just a misunderstood, sexy elf who hasn't been treated well in his life so if he doesn't want to sugercoat the truth to make you feel better, good. It's what you deserve. I don't know why people have such hate towards him. I mean look at my avatar, how could you hate that? :3

I didn't particularly like Fenris.

I might have liked him more if the quirks of Friendship/Rivalry system didn't make those occasions when he actually agreed with me about things tremendously frustrating. But I probably wouldn't have been all that keen even then.

But, fundamentally, I don't think it's a problem if there are a couple characters you don't like, since you can always leave them out of the party. I'd rather have a couple of characters I ignore than a whole party of blandly inoffensive middle of the road types.

If literally every line out of Fenris' mouth had been about his torture he would not have been whining.

That doesn't mean he should complain about it to Hawke for SEVEN years without making some effort to make a step forward in his life. Especially if Hawke happens to be a mage, in which case she becomes his proxy to hate on Danarius, mages, magic and more Danarius.

Merrill has an innocent view of the world. Fenris is just trying to get her to see that's its not so innocent.

I usually like all of the characters in these games.  But on my first playthrough of DA2, I actually ended up not liking Fenris, largely because of how hard he was on Merrill in the banter.  It just crossed a line.  And I got tired of the same thing from him.

On my second playthrough, I usually had him in the party and came to like him because of all of his comments about situations you could wind up in--things he knew about the Qunari for example.  So I ended up changing my mind on him and valuing him as a character.   One other thing I like about Fenris is that he probably has the best backstory, as revealed in game, of any of the characters.  Isabela's his competition there--and if you count the comics, I put her as having the most interesting "origin".  But if we restrict ourselves to DA2, Fenris is the closest to feeling like he has the conversational depth of a DAO character in the "homebase" scenes.

Fenris was not complaining to Hawke, he was whining.  There's a big difference.  I don't think that he is wrong to whine about mages, but the difference is that by saying he complained, it is implied that there is a higher authority for Fenris to complain to, but this is not the case.  Fenris only answers to himself

Are you really going to argue with the game itself? You're like emzamination, telling Gaider that his own statements are meaningless unless sourced and backed up by... his own statements...

Nah, Mage!Hawke becomes Fenris' mage friend that proves his prejudice isn't really bad!

Oh I just think the fact it's named that is funny.  Everything else I wrote in the post genuinely irritates me.

And his fans are the worst.  Not saying you're necessarily one of the ones who bug me just because you're representing Fenris fandom here, though.  Unless of course you're one of those who claim Fenris is "just like my husband."

Add that all we really know or learn about him is that he was a slave, can't remember his past and hates mages. That's literally all I remember about him.

Its funny how his fans excuse everything he does. He is just as emo as Anders.  They are cut from the same card and just thrown on opposite sides.

Anyway, I made this thread to prove a point.

I'd also say Fenris seems lot more interesting in banter with other people (not Merrill) than he is with Hawke. He plays cards, he jokes, I could like this guy

But all his Hawke conversations are "I hate mages, slavery is bad, I hate mages".

Merrill has an innocent view of the world. Fenris is just trying to get her to see that's its not so innocent.

We'll have to agree to disagree.


He insulted the Dalish and hates the Alienage.   He think he thinks those elves are BENEATH him.  

It would have been nice to have seen some evolution near the end.
