See, I just solved the Fenris problem by being mean to him until we had angry sex. It all worked itself out.

This is how my mage Hawke handled it as well. :innocent:

Seriously people, always the complaints about alleged whining. If you don't like a character, don't use him/her.

You want us to end up with only Jacob characters? No whining, no issues, no personality...

Kind of hard not to use characters in DA2, where they are forced on you. I really like Varric, but someone who doesn`t will be forced to have him in the party ALOT. Since you can`t change weapon styles and such on companions, you are forced to use Aveline (if you are not playing a sword + shield character yourself). After Bethany disapears you are forced to use Anders if you want healing spells. its what happens when the game doesn`t let you customize your companions at all.

True, you are pretty much stuck with Anders. I think, plot wise, as well. I was not a big fan of Anders, but sometimes you have to work with people you don't like. So, that was the attitude my Hawkes took.

Fenris, however, you don't have to use. I loved him, though. I mean, have you heard his voice? ;)

I did not expect to like Fenris in DA2. But in the end, he suprised me. His views are rather extreme (Anders' polar opposite, really) but he also did a good job at illustrating the dark side of mages. I ended up really liking his character, ridiculous though he looked (big props to his VA though)

Still can't help but rival him, even when siding with the templars though...

I disliked him at fist, same with what he loked like, and he did come off as really ... I dunno ... rough I guess.

But I'm a completionist and di my best to talk to him, and found I really warmed up to him quick.  I didn't romance him or anything but I found him, in the end, to be a very likable character.

Since we have a post about Merrill  and Anders. I figured Fenris deserves one too. :wizard:

He whined and bellowed just as much as Anders did but most of the fans excuse it.

He was horribly malicious to Merrill.

I think his viciousness towards Merrill was the reason I came to dislike him. I did kill Danarius though. I may have disliked the character but I couldn't send him back to Danarius.

So does this means if you see people jumping off a bridge you'll jump too? isn't that sad?I'll follow but I warn you I won't jump but, I'll help with the pushing part. ^_^

I see you're viciously attacking Fenris because he speak the truth to Merril, well let me inform you that merril sees herself above all the elves living in the city, it pass 7 year and  she still doesn't look at them as equals.
I don't care if she sees herself above sebastian, maker bless her soul but to her own people? no, just no.

Someone I dislike is Sebastian who is trying to make everyone in the party an Andrastian and then is trying to convince fenris on betraying hawke's friends, you want to dislike someone? then freaking check everyone also and not just the ones who put others in their places.<_<

I want his VA, but Fenris himself? MEH. The way he treated Merril was just insane, and I say that as someone who doesn't like her at all.

I thought Fenris was a great character. Added some depth to the game. Not just another typical character. And dat voice!

I found Fenris to be rather one note. Anders was infinitely more interesting. And I never really felt like Fenris wanted to hang out with Hawke. He hated Aveline, Merril, and Anders. I guess he tolerated Varric. (It's hard not to like Varric.) The only character he really got along with was Isabella.

Out of all of the characters in the franchise, not seeing Fenris again won't actually bother me.

Uhm... what? Where did you get the vibe that Fenris hates Aveline? They seem to get along just fine. She adjusts the patrols around his mansion and he even asks her for help when his sister is coming to Kirkwall. He apparently trusts her.

Omg please just stop, Fenris didn't hate Aveline, Aveline put guards in fenris door helping him to keep the place, he attack Merril because she thinks she walks in air and yet what is she? a blood mage who think is above all the other elves because she is dalish and is going to be fooled by a demon, wich it may or may not happens but if it does happen then she is the cause of the destruction her own people.
excuse me but the only thing Fenris is doing to her is opening her eyes and showing her that she is one step closer to become another Danarious: a vicious self centered blood mage.

About hating Anders.. he does but why? because anders with all his knowledge about the fade and spirits still is possesed by one and on top of that he try to defend his doing as it was nothing and pointing to Merril of what could become.. ironic isn't he? when in fact he in one moment of rage could destroy kirkwall.

Fenris doens't like mages in general because any minute one of them could be the cause of great pain and suffering and fenris knows of that all too well.

I like both Character Anders and Fenris they are both right and yet so very wrong.

I loved both chars, and although I hated to see the way he treated Merrill. It is totally understandable from his view, past and experiences.

And cause Merrill is so awesome, his hate just passes over her head anyway.

For me, Fenris is a little representative of the imbalance between pro/anti-mage. The game leans pro-mage, and Fenris comes across like a jerk. He was alright, but felt out of place.

Wasn't a fan of his look though. Felt very AWESOME BUTTON!-mentality.

This.  I had moments where I wanted to hug them, moments when I wanted to hurl them both out the window of the tallest building in Hightown.  That IMO is what makes NPCs interesting and fun as party members.

Never liked him either, looked some sort of weird Japanese anime FF figure. And I bet they made his figure so to appeal to the JRPG lovers.

"Oh, Hawke, sit down and listen to me brood". * cue music and Fenris hair flip* "Hawke, I was hurt in the past. I can't move one. Mages. Hawke, mages. Danarius, Hawke. Hawke, look, I sparkle in the sunlight. Hawke, my past, it hurts. Freedom doesn't taste like chicken, Hawke. Hawke, just sit there and watch me sparkle for a bit.....okay that's enough now. Hawke, so much angst all up in me. Danarius, Hawke. And mages. And my tats. And my theme. Hawke".

I loathed this character. Anders had nothing on this guy.

Ah, yes, the "JRPG."  Wanna bring PC vs. console into this too while you're at it?

Dude look at Fenris, everything about him screams one of those weird Japanese anime characters or some JRPG character.

I have no idea where all the fenris hate comes from.

Fenris does not whine at all.

Fenris had lyrium burnt into his skin. Imagine the most painful thing you can, then imagine ten times that.

If literally every line out of Fenris' mouth had been about his torture he would not have been whining.

We whine more than Fenris ever could.

Whining about torture is jusitfied because...it's torture. A lack of social understanding is the problem when complaining about someone whining.

@karlone123

I didn't like fennris because of his narrow minded view of mages, And whining about torture is normal but fennris uses it as a excuse to treat mages poorly while he never stops and considers his doing the same thing that was done him.

Oh look, another Fenris hate thread... I wonder if I should bother giving a opinion or just wait for it to turn into and Anders hate thread, like they always do. Decisions, decisions.:P

Yah, Fenris is a big jerk, but for those people saying he has no part in the plot? He is the only character with first hand knowledge of what a place where mages are free to take care of themselves looks like. He was created to be the "non-neutral-I-actually-have-a-reason-to-hate-mages" voice in the game, and like it or not as someone who has seen and lived this "free mage world" his opinions and points should carry some weight.

Is this to say he isn't a huge ass sometimes? Nope, I don't think any Fenris fan is so delusional as to not see that our boy is riddled with *throttle* moments, but that seems more a problem with convo choices, never do you get to say "Fenris there are three mages helping you all the time! I/Bethany am/is a mage!" and he doesn't acknowledge it, he only has Merrill a mage already fallen to Bloodmagic, and Anders a mage Already posessed by a demon and planning to turn the entir world into the Imperium.

Also, he can admit eventually that "what has been done, he has done to himself" and that his hatred of mages is a "poison he willingly swallows" So though he can never be convinced that all mages should be free, he can see that not all mages are evil. That conclusion is a huge step for an elf that grew up in the presence of Mages who literally took everything from him, and then treated him as something worse than nothing, and for him to learn it in ten years and only days after he is no longer actively hunted.. He is also the only character who can truely have reasons for not wanting mages free and still willingly stand by Hawke in their defense.

Edit: Cause I could.

Lmao rival Carver is the best; I was fed up with his b!tching and having Hawke and him verbally spat like siblings make it seem more life-like lol

And he gets hit with the "whiney" label too.  Which usually translates to "character who doesn't bow to my every decision and revolve around me."

I like characters who kick back every once in a while.  It makes things more interesting and realistic.  Mass Effect was in sore need of someone to put Shep in his/her place.

This x1000

I realy got sick of everyone singing Shepard's praises every time they talked to him/her. It felt like playing a very Sueish escapist character to project yourself onto rather than an actual part of the world. It got very out-of-control in ME2, though ME3 did a great deal to make Shepard more human.

I prefer characters that dislike or disagree with the PC. It makes for great conflict and conflict is the heart of interesting stories, not ego-stroking.

One of my favorite lines of his is on the non-romanced friend path when he says "Never thought I'd call a mage a friend, and yet here you are."

**
I enjoyed the perspective he brought to the story, I enjoyed how he'd ****** off some of my Hawkes and be a total sweetheart to others depending on how I played. However, I appreciate all the characters for what they are, even the ones I personally am not that fond of.

Isn't it nice that BioWare gives the player the option to either skip the quest to recruit him or later tell him you won't help? Same with Merrill, you can bring her to Kirkwall and then ignore her the rest of the game. In Act 2 you can tell Anders to kick rocks and he does (and doesn't show up again until the end-game Chantry). Ahh freedom for those that don't like these characters, how novel!

What and miss the chance to fulfill the deep rooted fantasy they have to sell someone into slavery just because that person doesn't get along with them. *gasp* How could you suggest just not recruiting them. Obviously that makes no sense I mean they might hate them and want them dead/enslaved, but until then they need their skills.Geez.<_<
