Although, I have a weird feeling Bodahn is going to bite the dust early on in DA 3. Leaving poor Sandal an orphan again.

I'm afraid that David may have too much regret over the way he's been characterized (or the way it's been interpreted), and that it might get in the way of Sandal's reappearance.
It would be a shame.

"Who was the boy in hawkes house?"
"Looked like that Auducan bastard that got lost in the deep roads a while back"
"The one who's mother was an elf, right?"
"I thought his mother was a human"
.....if sandal is half-something else, that may explain him being a mage. And didn't Bohdan find him in the deep roads?

There's a youtube video of dialogue from the da2 legacy dlc. And there was this comment by some of the carta members you can sneak up on

All things considered, that Sandal and Bodahn will be in the next game is pretty much given. As for his true form...I always thought Sandal was perhaps some Old God trapped in dwarven form or something along those lines.
Why does everyone assume all mysterious characters are trapped Old Gods? Flemeth i can understand, since she can turn into a dragon and all, but if anything; Sandal is connected to The Stone somehow. Whether he be an avatar of the Stone, or he just has a deep connection to it; it would better explain his lyrium-bender abilities.
Or better yet, maybe Sandal is a type of mage, but his dwarven resistence doesn't allow him to connect to the Fade. He connect directly to the Stone, or more extreme... to the realm beyond the Fade. The place where Morrigan went to threw the mirror.
