Not true... they each have their own character traits that make them special in some way. Varric is just the most popular companion, not the best designed companion.

I actually liked Varric. More than once I fretted if I should take him or Sebastian for my ranged fighter.

Meh, Varric and Hawke were awesome but he's a big liar. Yeah, an epic story is great but I want a dwarf I can trust at my brand new back, not Hawke's buddy looking to dine out on yet another hero's tail. Erm, tale. <_<
