Wrong. Most people simply expected either something uplifting, something fulfilling for their investment in the story, something that allowed one to win, or something that was similar to the suicide mission of ME2.

People would have raged about something regardless, but the massive outcry would have never happened if any of the above were accomplished (in the eyes of most people).

Another theory I've been thinking about why the endings was poorly recieved is because they where bad. Just like a bad movie often is poorly recieved. But it's just a theory. I may be wrong.

Do I even dare to guess what the ending to DA3 will bring? ;)

We all merge with the darkspawn to create an everlasting utopia.

If what we saw in Awakenings is any indication, yes.:pinched:

look at the meaning of the term "troll"

for this to be a troll thread I would have to be posting this simply to get a rise out of people.

But I am completely serious, therefore this does not fit the definition of "troll thread"

i get that bioware was trying to be original/different/creative, but an ABC ending revolving around the metaphysical tension between organic and synthetic life has already been done (e.g., Deus Ex; Human Revolution). also, the DE:HR team did a much better job with this ABC ending than bioware, for a variety of reasons (one of the main ones being that their game was about this tension, like literally the entire game). bioware's attempt to replicate DE:HR's ending in ME3 was laughable at best and tragic at worst.

If you were serious, you'd at least have some data to reinforce this "theory" that has been completely and systematically refuted and debunked already.

If i wasn't serious I would be argueing with all the people who disagree.

I posted my opinion, just because you do not agree with it does not make it a troll thread.

But it's for the lolz.

Suicide Mission II on Steroidz that would have given people the adrenaline rush at the end when they "kicked the reapers in the daddy bags" that left the player shouting "FK Yeah!!!" when the final victory cutscene started with Shepard and squad making it back onto the Normandy or wherever to safety. Followed by the epilogue and credits.

That would have been the epic win ending. Cliche as hell, but the win.

Instead we got the epic fail ending. Real winning.

I don't care if it's cliche. I paid good money to be the goddamn hero. Now all I have is a harddrive full of regrets and $6.

look, I have better things to do then argue, this is not a troll thread, but if thinking it is helps you sleep at night, more power to you.

I sort of agree with OP. While the ending was a massive shift in tone and theme, if it weren't for the overwhelming amount of hype surrounding release, I doubt that the actual backlash would have been as extreme as it was.

I know that personally, if I had gotten the ME3 I expected, I'd be hooked on it 'till 2015 *at least*. I honestly expected the perfect, end all video game.

It came to the state where No game could realisticly match what fans expected.

When the game finally came out, and it could not live up to what people were sure it would be,

Then how come I found the game to be exceptional up until you get hit by a laser and it becomes idiotic?

It would have been nice if the game matched what the devs had said in interviews and such.

No, sorry. Many people, myself included, avoided everything Mass Effect related before the release. The only speculation I had going into it was that the series would end. I think most people weren't asking for much, to be honest. Sure there were some people that had unrealistically high expectations, but most of us went in to the game assuming there would be some way to achieve and satisfying ending that was influenced by the decisions made throughout the series.  That didn't happen, and THAT is the real reason the endings were poorly received.

Honestly, if they replaced the catalyst VI with another, different looking VI, I don't think it would have caused so much grief. I say this because when I saw the catalyst child, I knew immediately that Shep was either indoctrinated, or about to be unless we had enough Paragon/Renegade points to resist it. In my opinion, there was no other reason for the VI to look like the kid that had been haunting your sleep.
Then when I realized Shepard wasn't indoctrinated, and that I had no other option but to follow the VI blindly, without even questioning its resemblance to the earth kid, the game suddenly felt very unfamiliar and the good writing I had come to love disappeared altogether.
