I'd rather we have completely new ones, unless the old ones genuinally fit and makes sense.
For example, Awakenings.. sure, Oghren was fun if it made sense. But in one of my playthroughs, he died. In another, he was meant to have become a great general and loving family guy. Frankly, he didn't make too much sense. The first example of a poorly implemented old companion being put in a scenario that makes no sense purely because he's 'old'.
Anders is the next big offender. The story would've made just as much sense, probably more, if his role was given to some unnamed apostate. He was quite clearly only implemented, again like Oghren, simply because he was an old companion. Wasn't a fan of it, and this is coming from someone that loved his romance. I love his character, but I will happily admit his presence in the story made hardly any sense.
Isabela was okay, possibly even good.
Merril was okay.
So we have 2 examples of what not to do and what should be done. Plus, truth be told, I think all of the DA2 characters stories were kinda told and over. The only exception might be Sebastion and the Hawke sibling. Everyone else, they got what they wanted.
Fenris got his freedom. Aveline got her happy family. Merril got closure on the mirror. Varric got his big story. Anders got the war. All of their stories are over and completed. Isabela got her ship, or a new outlook on life. It would be a shame to drag them into some (possibly) unrelated event just for the benefit of fans going 'OMG I KNOW HIM/HER'.
And another reason not to do it, it's abit unrealistic. In DA2, it seriously felt like I took half of Fereldan with me. I mean, it's meant to be a huge world yet I, the playing character, seems to keep running into old faces.. to me, it seems just a tad unrealistic.
So yeah, I think I'd be mainly against it. The only characters that really makes sense in returning are the Hawke sibling and Sebastion. Everyone else, they got their happily ever after one way or another, it would be detrimental to their character development if Bioware over uses them.
