My Dream team:

1) Mabari war hound - offence warrior: based on berserker specialization

2) Mabari war hound - defence warrior: based on Aveline's specialization

3) Mabari war hound - grey warden: a grey warden didn't survive the joining, dropped the chalice, and the mabari licked up the "grey warden juice" and survived

4) Mabari war hound - templar: it was the result of an experiment done by a group of templars; it eats lyrium (give it two lyrium potions everyday or it can't use its abilities); its bark nullifys magic; it has a natural magic resistance that is 10 + its current level

5) Mabari war hound - melee rogue: it has metal teeth and unlocks stuff by biting the lock off; it can stealth; it "hamstrings" (biting the target's hamstring or achilles tendon) instead of backstabbing

6) Mabari war hound - archer: it has metal teeth and unlocks stuff by biting the lock off; it can stealth; it wears a special harness made by a crazed dwarf inventor which allows the dog to fire a crossbow

7) Mabari war hound - blaster mage: it's possessed by a rage demon; breathes fire; shoots fireballs from its eyes

8) Mabari war hound - healer mage: it's possessed by a spirit of compassion and acts as party healer

9) Crazy steve - ???: crazy man that believes he is a mabari; leaps on enemies, holds them down while biting them (only works because he's 7'3" and weighs 240 lbs); talks in "barks" and "woofs"

10) Mabari war hound - normal mabari, with abilities based on the mabari from DA:O

Not because I don't want Cullen! Quite the reverse, really. It's just that I got this mental image of Cullen and the as-yet-to-be-announced protagonist (who has a BG-style question mark for a portrait) attempting to herd nine nugs through Val Royeaux.

Oh, and to make this post not completely  off topic :P, 10 seems like an awful lot...if that's true. They tried that with ME2, having so many characters (not that I'm complaining about the characters per say, they were great!) spread the writers focus to thin and it felt like this resulted in less character development. Sure the DA team is different and I don't doubt their abilities,  they're awesome folk and I haven't been disappointed in their characters so far, it's just that...the more companions there are, it can mean less development for them. I don't know, we'll see when Bioware announces the characters and how many there actually are and when the game comes out. Either way, I'd like to see at least a couple characters (like Cullen <3) make a return as companions, I'm also looking forward to meeting some new characters as well :)

Oh god no

(Don't get me wrong, that dlc was fun, and I love felicia day, but I found tallis so annoying I wanted to throttle her)

Same, but if she does return, I think she'll be less of a Mary Sue and not know everything about everything.

DAO had 10 companions and DA2 had 9 companions.

I wouldn't really count dog as one. Shale was a DLC character. Loghain you got for the last hour or so, but he was mainly a NPC.

DA2 had 8 (although your sibling is gone for almost all of Act 2 and 3 and the other is dead), 9 if you add in a DLC character.

I think 6-8 is the sweet spot personally for the core game (personally leaning closer to 6). Adding some more through DLC is fine though.

As for my thoughts on previous companions/characters: I'm not a fan of old/previous characters returning with a new protagonist. Show us the thousands of personalities in Thedas rather than rehashing the same couple dozen. It makes sense if the Warden or Hawke was the protagonist old characters would return, but show us new stuff with a new guy.

I'd be fine with old companions retuning as long as it's nobody potentially dead. It's already bad enough with Zombie Leliana running around (not to mention Anders, and others too if you count books i guess) without adding the others in.

I realise this eliminates a good chunk of them, what can i say? i like killing my friends.

As much as I like old characters and as much as I would love to have Anders back on my team (yes, I like Anders, deal with it B)), I just hope it won’t happen as it did with ME3, when you got each of 1 past companions returning for, like, 5 minutes and then leaving. Felt like a very fast flashback… a very fast and short one. They either have to pick 3-4 main companions and develop their stories, or give us totally new bros. As Fallout 2 said: “…Don't forget that more than 5 is always a crowd.”

Although, Varric is a MUST have companion. :D

I too would prefer no old companions. I am, however, a proponent of companion dlc- optional tidbits for those desiring additional adventures with their cyber pals.Image IPB

I don't want any previous companions returning as companions. Having them as important NPCs or quest-givers is fine, but it just doesn't seem right having the Warden's or Hawke's companions joining the new protagonists party.

It makes the world seem smaller, if each new protagonist is running into too many of the characters the previous ones worked with.

I agree, secondary characters are fine (Cullen, Cassandra), but not the main companions.  I'm a bit torn on Shale and Nathaniel Howe because one was DLC and the other was from an expansion pack.  I'd be okay with either or both of them coming back, but not the main ones like Leliana, Morigan or Alistair.
It's time to move on.

I hope that Cullen is a companion, and he is so lyrium-addled that he can barely walk straight or form a coherent sentence. The Thedas version of David Hasselhoff, if you will.

This is why we can't have nice things.  It's also why the save import should be thrown away.

Let's be honest. Would anyone really be that upset if Shale was a companion? If there's one old companion, I want my grumpy, bird hating Golem. I need a sig for SHALE FOR DRAGON AGE 3! : )

You mean visually?  I wouldn't mind a visual upgrade.  Hell, it makes sense with a creature made out of rock.  (They just need to keep the VO).

As far as personality?  Gaider has written Shale in two novels and it's still Shale.  I don't think you can mess up Shale.

I must be in the minority in that I want all new characters. I know and love the old companions, but I've played with them and followed their story arcs already. I want people we've never seen as companions--female Kossith, Orlesian chevaliers, that sort of thing.

Then again, DG already said they've got the cast set :)

Would love to have Cullen and Cassandra in the party :-)

For me:

01. Isabella- Easily one of DA's coolest characters, and her backstory in DA2 and comic appearance gives her an opportunity to continue her adventures. She has no obligations to anyone and gets more of the Maker's favor than Leliana on any good day.

02. Fenris- A personal favorite of mine. Like Isabella much of his appearance in DA2 leaves room for his adventures to continue. He's a wandering soul, and with the continuing threat of the Qunari as well as the Inquisition, I think he would make a fine character for such a party. Perhaps continuing as an elven templar? Plus an elf warrior's always nice to break the tropes, even if he's gotta rock the Final Fantasy look ;)

03. Aveline Vallen- She's sorely underrated yet one of my favorite party members of all time. She's got some memorable lines and very level headed. Plus I'd love to see more Isabella/Aveline antics (just think of them on a reluctant road trip). Unless Aveline's decided to enjoy her wedded bliss, I can see her coming back in the party, possibly with/or Donnic (Virmire situation?).

04. Varric: We saw his side of the story in DA2. Perhaps we can have the truth in DA3, not told from his perspective? Or...his storytelling continues as the resident bard of the series. Either way he broke many racial and class tropes, plus I'd love to see him and Cassie have party banter. They're quite familiar.
