I see all these type of threads:

"Don't bring back Anders, or someone like him!"
"Don't bring back Merrill, or someone like her!"
"Don't bring back Isabella, she is tooooooo sexual!"
etc. etc.

 - I say, ignore them all.

Most of these threads are started by edit: probably started by people who have paid no attention to that characters story arc, or made any attempt to explore why these characters are the way they are.

The great thing about Dragon Age is your party is big enough to find at least 3 people you like enough to take on your adventure! So it's probably safer to keep the game as diverse, or even more diverse then previous games.

Personally, I think Merrill and Varric are pretty cool, but someone else may like Anders and Isabella, or Fenris and Aveline.

 - Tell you what, put whoever you like in, if there is anything I trust BioWare to do well is write decent characters. I may not like some of their designs, but that is for another thread, the actual characters are great.

That's rather accusatory towards those people, but regardless, I'm confident that BWE will bring back the ones that they feel enough players will enjoy to make it worth their inclusion.

Those threads that you mention most often seem to show how much of an impact those particular characters had.

It's a good thing they now have your permission to do what they want. Usually they just make their decisions based on forum posts.

The risk with BW bringing back old companions (which I don't think they will) is that it will take away focus from new companions and make character development redundant. What ever they do, I hope they will bring back the ability to interact with the characters when ever we want instead of make it quest driven.

Some of those threads strike me more as threads to troll the original hate threads. Wouldn't take them very serious. Not that BioWare will, anyway.

I mean... the Isabela thread is from Hoorayforicecream. That's like Wayne Gretzky demanding that ice hockey gets banned.

I'd restate the obvious:

Bioware shouldn't bring back characters "just because". If the game is changed, it won't go well with fans of the game from where the character is.

Just hearing Alistair talking in this cheesy and cheap cinema-sequence (not to mention the facial ugurdhok) will horribly tear me apart Lisa.

I wish they'd ignored all the campaigns since ME1..

But yes - their characters are usually awesome. Aveline in DA2 was one of my favourite characters of all time.

I'm not 100 percent sure, but seeing as how this game has been in development for a while, I'm GUESSING that they have at least a rough sketch of their LIs personalities, backgrounds, appearances, etc. It's not something that would be a last-minute addition, especially with how immersed in the plot BW's companions tend to be.

The main job of a character is to be remembered, so these 'hate' threads I would see as compliments to the strength of the character.

I agree. People who don’t like specific characters should just have an ability not to take them in their party. That's simple. Don’t ruin fun for everyone else based on subjective opinions.

For the most part all the companions are wonderfully written, Bioware's writers are masters at creating memorable characters (you don't have to like their personality to know they're well written). I think I'd be fine with whoever they choose to bring back or introduce all new characters (which would be even better!)

I didn't really like any of the companions from DA2. Bethany had a potential I think but the rest - not so much.

I'd rather they develop some new characters. Bringing back the same characters again and again, will make the world feel small. If we play a character that travel around the world then cameos would make sense. But having characters just popping up again and again, and going to the setting of the next game, and the next game, and the next game, just because they are popular is weird.

The only person I want to see come back is Varric because he doesn't whine and is the easiest to get along with. The others can come as Cameo's as I really don't hate them but we just need new blood.

No! Don't bring back ANY of the characters, or else I'll kill this puppy right here! If there's a character you made, don't bring THEM back or anyone like them. Make the game completely devoid of characters except a blinking dot that participates in Quicktime events! In fact, I will kill this puppy right here AND set off a nuclear bomb in Canada if you don't do this!
