The difference is that in novels there are no actual faces to put onto the paper unless there are illustrations. I would put this more akin with playing with models/toys/dolls/teddies and imagining them with emotions where there clearly aren't.
Which I suppose happens often enough anyway, but it still startles me when people say how much love he has in his eyes, when all I see is stock animation blendshape eyebrows B and stock animation lips C or something that has been used before but not in the same context and used for a different expression. But then again as I said I work in animation so maybe that's just me.
I work with 3d models and I know they are very clay-like and lifeless. Eyes are especially difficult to make look real, because as they say 'eyes are the windows to the soul' so that's where most expressions usually are seen and it's extremely important to get the eyes just right. I think the devs did an excellant job with the expressions in the game. And for the most part, the eyes really do convey a certain realness and you can tell if the character is angry or is being really sweet or is embarassed. I mean yeah, some of it is our own imagination. But I still think there are more expressions in the game than you realize. Maybe the devs can help us out on this.
Edit: an example of a scene where Alistair, I think, is showing a lot of emotion (especially in the eyes) is the scene of the PC's joining. Alistair looks downright terrified. He knows that someone is probably going to die and is pretty freaked out. And after Ser Jory is gutted, he looks as if he's going to puke. Surely I'm not the only one who saw it that way.
