So, up until three hours ago, I was on top of the world.

You see, I used to have a laptop, a pretty damn good one to, considering it was a laptop, it was my pride and joy, and had everything you could ever imagine in it, several cores, good amount of RAM, huge Hard Drive, Nvidia 9800, all sorts of little goodies in that laptop, and as you could probably guess, it was expensive, in fact, I used the money I got to buy my car on my Laptop, because at the time, I was about to join the Military, and figured I wouldn't need a car, while I would need games.

Well, long story short, that laptop fried three hours ago, mobo is dead, and took the Hard Drive, and most of the other things down with it, with the sweet irony being it lost its warranty just last night, and I don't have a single penny to spare to get it fixed, even though it would probably only come up to $300-$400, I just don't have that kind of money.

So I was forced to go back to my old computer, which was made back when I was 14-15 to be my first PC, this thing is literally falling apart at the seams, its got more viruses then a biological lab, due to it being my computer during the stupid years, and has several registry files missing, due to my cousins boyfriend deciding that deleting folders was a good way to fix the slowdown caused by all the virsus.

It also has some pretty old hardware in it, the graphics card is only a 6600, the Processor can only do ~1.2GHZ, and I only have 512 RAM, and 70 gigs, two of its fans are broken from years of being beaten up, I don't even think the Sound Card still works.

But amazingly enough, even in all this pretty terrible news, I'm still having an alright time, several of my friends have decided to give me the old hardware they no longer need, as they upgraded this Christmas, I'm getting a new Moniter from my Neighbor, a Canadian friend is giving me 4 gigs of RAM, one of my best friends is giving me his old 8800 to replace my old 6600, and his friend apparently has some fans that he doesn't need anymore that he'll give me.

I dunno, thought I would just share this story, possibly show people that all people are not total ****s, and the Christmas spirit is still around, it may not be totally perfect for me, my Processor will still be total crap for example, but at least its a lot better then what it was before, and I found it fairly humbling to go from so high, to so low.

And now I go to bed.

That was good holiday story. You are fortunate to have four such generous friends. To say nothing of how amazing their upgrade timing was. What happened to your laptop is... unfortunate, to put it lightly. If something like that happened to my PC I'd probably cry. Like you, I poured a considerable amount into it, and my previous desktop is substantially inferior.

Thankfully you didn't have to downgrade. :) That would've been awful.

Wonderful to have such friends. Most "techie" types have a surplus of old hardware, we never throw working parts out :))

I've helped out several friends by installing my old cast-offs in their broken machines!

So minor update that makes this even nicer.

One friend is chipping in his 8800 with 512 onboard RAM he just upgraded from, as well as his old XP discs, and this computer DESPERATELY needs a wipe, and I never got the discs as it was shop made for me.

Another is handing over 2 gigs of DDR RAM ( I was wrong, he only had 2 gigs ), sadly this PC doesn't seem to be able to handle that, as the mobo is so old that it doesn't like DDR2, but I managed to find a good deal on Newegg for a new mobo and a new 2.6 GHZ dual core for $106, and after emailing Newegg about my situation, managed to get it dropped down to $80 for the both of them.

Add in the monitor my neighbor gave me ( WIDESCREEN LCD I LOVE YOU even if you have a few pixels in the lower right that are dead ) and the Sound Card my ex is giving me, and its so far turning out to be a not so bad day, would have been better without the whole spending $80 thing, and my old laptop still being up and running, but overall, not as bad as it was several hours ago.

Still can't beat essentially building a new computer for under $100 bucks!
When I built The Gigabyte I thought I was getting a steal building a computer that could handle Intel's current top of the line processor, for under $300. Then I found out I didn't have a power supply remotely capable of powering the mother board and video card! Oh well, I still came in just over 400.00 (needless to say, while I could put it in this MB, I didn't spring for the latest $1000 CPU!)

Could be worth trying to claim under the warranty, some (few, very few) companies do give a couple of days leeway, and with it being christmas, just fudge the truth to say it broke christmas day, and you haven't called before, as you assumed no-one would be working.
