****LATEST UPDATE*****

Thanks for the support everybody! Chris Schanche is looking into the matter. In the meantime, here are the current results.

Blade Armor is bugged on gold and platinum. Based on tests by Cyonan and Corlist, it appears that Blade Armor DIVIDES the base damage by three on Gold and Platinum, and returns that value, hence why so little damage is dealt. This is in contrast to Silver and Bronze, in which BA deals 3x the base damage back (often nearly killing most troopers). Thanks to Annomander, Cyonan, and corlist for helping nail down the bug.

There also still is the possibility that Blade Armor returns no damage if the damage cap of 2000 is exceeded, instead of dealing 2000 like intended. I originally felt like this was the case, but I've not done extensive testing and am inclined to defer to Cyonan and Corlist's tests.

Original post:

Watching Annomander's video here, it almost looks like the BA doesn't give back damage the majority of times he is hit. A couple of times it is delayed (he was playing on my connection, half a world away), but a lot of times it doesn't even register.

I've never seem to have had a problem with it working; but then again I've always taken the extra damage returned evo, so that might 'override' a possible bug. Has anyone tested BA since the patch? It has worked for me as far as I can recall in my two rounds as BatSol.

EDIT: See post below. I tested just now, and BA isn't working properly. Does only one bar of damage to lesser reaper units, no matter how it is specced, or how powerful their melee is.

On my list to investigate. Just don't want to comment really until I have more solid information.

I can do some more investigation on this based on that data, you could be right, but that said the end point I mentioned does still stand. None of this can be repaired through the weekly balance changes and we do not have any plans to make changes to blade armor at this time.

While we would love to fix everything, right now the other benefits that Blade Armor grants are strong enough that we don't believe this bug to be massively detrimental as compared to other more important issues.

Chris, thanks again, and I understand that it isn't possible to fix this with a balance change.  However, wouldn't it be possible to give the Blade Armor a bit of a compensatory buff?  For example, a reasonable increase to the Damage Reduction, Melee Damage, or Shield Recharge bonus?

We feel that all of those aspects are already pretty strong, and we don't want to do a reflex buff to make up for the bug when we feel that it may risk overpowering the ability.  I'm not saying we wont ever look at buffs to it, but at this time I don't believe we are going to make any changes to the power.

I think people should remember that patching a game costs money, it costs $40,000 for one patch on Xbox or PS3. So something like fixing an ability so it properly reflects melee damage on gold/platinum doesn't seem worth it (unless you include it as a fix in a larger patch like the one we saw the other month).

That having been said, what confuses me is whether the weekly balance changes count as 'patches'. Because if they do that would mean Bioware is spending $40k a week just to tweak the multiplayer. Seems like a lot... but I guess maybe it isn't when you have a company selling millions of copies of their games?

Weekly balance changes do not go through a first party certification process.  Whenever you log into multiplayer, it queries the server to find out what the current balance numbers should be, and adjusts accordingly, so the weekly fixes are stored server side and never actually 'patch' the game.  It's quite powerful, but of course also limited which is why we primarily only change basic values with the weekly updates.
