I've played Dragon Age Origins...and that's what led me to ME.
Mass Effect is by far...my favorite series...be it games or television.
However, my love for ME...means I've played the series multiple times now.
I've been looking for games like ME and Dragon Age...
...games where you can create/customize your character...have companions...level up and all that. With a good story as well.
Games like ME

If you like good sci-fi stories try Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. It's not an RPG but a tactical space combat game - but really good.

The Witcher games are pretty brilliant.

Witcher 2 contains alot more gore and nudity than Witcher 1, so if you want a mature dark experience go for Witcher 2, the gameplay even changes depending on the choises you make, so if you go path 1,or 2 you basicly get 20 hours of new game play if you decide to replay it again

I haven't really found much that match the great sci fi feeling of Mass Effect yet I guess Starcraft II does have elements of the story elements but none of the gameplay or heavy story focus. So yeah stick with Bioware's games. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the witcher II so that might also be worth a try.

Alpha Protocol.
Very similar to ME in terms of game mechanics (uses Unreal 3) but it's set in the world of spionage. The story takes place in Mid East, Rome, Taipei and Moscow (my favourite set of missions), allows very different approaches for missions as soldier (all guns blazzing), agent (silent infiltration, my favourite) or tech specialist (creating distractions or sabotages), high impact of decisions, 3 different personalities or approaches for conversations ("Bond", "Bourne" or "Bauer").
The game had some flaws but trully great potential, hope to see a sequel sometime.

I'd recommend Alpha Protocol as well.
It is has great story, and I've yet to play an RPG with so many options where all of your choices matter. Like Mass Effect 1 the gameplay is a little wonky, but worth it for the story.
The Witcher 2 is also a great game if you are interested in playing something with a fantasy setting. In the Witcher 2 you get faced with choices that end up branching off into completely seperate storylines in different locations and different allies. Its another game where your choices matter.

The majority of negative things you'll hear about Alpha Protocol come from dudebros who were expecting it to be the next Splinter Cell, not a spy-thriller themed action RPG.
It's a great game with some quirkiness, but great nonetheless.

KotOR.
Eh, the first time I played KotOR I loved it and it sold me on Bioware. But I just started it again, like yesterday, and I just can't get back into. It really hasn't aged very well. I mean, I can still play RPGs from the SNES and love them just as much as I did the first time I played them - so I don't mean just the graphics. But the gameplay mechanics, the voice dialogue - I don't know, I just have the impression that it is not nearly as good as I initially assessed.

The Fallout series. Play F3, great atmosphere. The story is decent. If you're going to play F3, then go with the GoTY edition.

Try Deus Ex.
Not Human Revolution. Deus Ex. The main character is JC Denton.
Pretty old, but awesome.

Star Control II
http://pikigeek.com/...iritual-father/
I played that game and was like 'Wow, that's so cool!'. And I explained the game to my little brother and he said 'Oh, you mean Mass Effect!'. That's how I started playing. Casey Hudson also was a big fan of Star Control and this similar game from the same era I read later on.

Alpha Protocol is REALLY underrated, give it a chance - it's really quite excellent.
The Witcher 1&2 are really, really good especially if you play them in order and have read at least 'The Last Wish' (the book the character Geralt of Rivia is based on: The Witcher).
Skyrim-Oblivion-Morrowind are all excellent games, especially with mods, don't miss these - they have the best RPG lore in Fantasy IMO. I prefer Dragon Age's tactical gameplay, but Elder Scrolls has the best world I reckon.
Fallout 1-2 are great old-schoolers, F3 is awesome but to be honest, New Vegas is the best of the lot (especially with all the DLC) by FAR. It's probably my pick of this whole bunch, it's kind of sci-fiey, but post-apocolyptic, which is just as good IMO. The world/writing really are so much better when done by Obsidian, if only they could stamp out all their bugs on release, the world would be more forgiving on them.
Also give Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 a playthrough definately, my first ever RPG was Baldur's Gate, and it simply blew me away. I was engrossed for 50 hours and then played the sequel straight after, pure Bioware/Black Isle goodness.
And last but very much not least, play Planescape Torment, it's simply the best RPG story ever told, and is like nothing else you have ever played.. simply devine (and like, $2.99 on GOG now I think
Go forth and conquer!

If you're talking about engaging worlds with excellent story:
Dishonored, Bioshock are my suggestions. Also play KOTOR.
