Well, I do see her as a bane. I reread the conversations, and the Guardian (whom my PC believes) called it a 'fearsome' creature. He also relates how the Cultists killed those who were in opposition to them. He states that he 'heard their cries, etc. for a long time'. I know that's only indirectly related to the dragon, but I for one can't warm up to the idea that she is just a dumb animal. Maybe I played D&D too much :)

They named it Andraste, didn't they? =P

Like the Mexican people called Jesus who aren't the Second Coming at all!

If every Mex called Jesus were a coming, there'd be like 2million comings I guess.

LOL, well it's not important to gameplay, but it is to my fanfiction story. My character would feel bad for the slaughter of an animal that is no danger to anyone...but she'd kick the hell outta a demon (well, she'd send Alistair to do it, while hiding behind him).

I looked at it this way:

1.  Since I myself am not fighting the dragon and dragonslaying is extremely cool, if there is a dragon present to be slain, it must be slain.
2.  No sane person would voluntarily fight a dragon if there was a way out of it.
3.  Therefore the dragon must spot them and attack first.

I assumed the dragon was ticked off that the party killed its worshipers (it's breakfast, where's my cow??) and tried to eat them for revenge.

The Codex is pretty explicit that dragons are of animal intelligence. Even the Archdemon never seems particularly bright, although I suppose it must be smarter than an ordinary dragon in order to lead an army.

Actually the codex entries are rather vague as they do not make any solid concllusion. But my iinterpretation is that dragons are clever as they would have too be to not only convince the cultists that it is their messiah, but also tell them that it wants the ashes destroyed, then there's also the fact that it has the intellegence to realise that the ashes are going to draw pilgrims to it's nest.

Also, the old gods seem to be ancient high dragons rather than actual gods.

On the note of dragons being evil or not, I think they are as their blood gave the power of blood magic to the tevinter magisters and also holds the power of the reaver. Therefore, they must surely be connected to demons in some way as this knowledge is usually granted by demons.
