I seem to pick up a lot of crystals and I never know what to do with them because you can't seem to enchant them onto weapons like you can with runes, so I usually just end up selling them all. They do seem to have some special properties, so what am I missing? How do you use them effectively?
What do you do with crystals?

You glue them to your golem :-)

You have to have the Stone Prisoner add on and recrute Shale.

You probably refer to the Small/Large Fire/Ice/Lightning/Spirit/Nature Crystals, which are used as weapons (small) and armor (large) for Shale (The Stone Prisoner DLC).
Apart from being used by that golem, they are of no use whatsoever by anyone else, and you can safely sell them.

And all new copies of the game come bundled with a promo code to be redeemed for the "Stone Prisoner" DLC.
(thus, if you have rented or bought the game 2nd hand, you have to buy the "Stone Prisoner" DLC seperately).

Oh I see, thanks! So many replies and so quickly...what a helpful community:)
Would it be a spoiler to ask if you can equip Shale with a lot of these crystals or just one at a time? I seem to collect a lot and quite frequently for something that can only be used for one optional character.

One large and one small.

Also, note that quality of the crystal determines it's effectiveness, i.e. for damage and protection bonuses. Once you get a better quality of a particular type of crystal, you can safely sell the lesser one.

It is a good idea to keep at 'secondary' set of crystals of a different type in your inventory. You don;t want to come up against a dragon when you have fire crystals for damage, or have to fight a bunch of undead with nature crystals for damage. It is also much better to have a fire armour crystal on for the aforementioned dragon than say, spirit.

That's so true. I always have 2-10 crystals to sell after any decently long questing trip. I find way more crystals than, say, mage gear. It's really quite lame.

They act like normal equipment, so sell away
The best bet is to wear one set, and keep an alternet set of a different type. no sense fighting a dragon with firefists, eh?

I put them in my windows next to fancy New Age medallions and pray to the Archangels of the seven light of Neptune

If you are ever short of the crystals. go to the tavern in radcliffe and if when you were defending the town and recruited the taver owner and he died you can talk to bella and she gives you free crystals...and to get more than what she has already just leave the tavern and go back in and she has more...plus its a good way to make some quick gold.
