As the subject header implies, what's the earliest point someone who is not a rogue PC can add a rouge NPC to the party for the lockpick skills?

Lillianna in Lothering. Technically, Daveth is a Rogue, but he has no lockpicking skills and never levels up, so he's darn near useless.

Lothering is the earliest point Leliana is the best lock picker as she has a few levels of it unlike Zevran who you get later and have to wait a few levels to do anything.

so, my next playthrough will be me as a male Blood Mage, Leliana, Morrigan and Wynne...That ought to make for a fun time at the Pearl...and one hell of a difficult playthrough without any kind of warrior...

Earliest? Well, you get your first leveling NPC in the form of Alistair. I think it's about level 11 when you start getting Red Steel gear. Put him in Red Steel armour and poof, a Rouge NPC :P

I know, horrible joke. I just always think it's funny when people ask for 'Rouges'. In answer to your question, Leliana is the first real rogue. As has already been mentioned, temp NPCs don't level and Daveth (and Lily, if you're playing the Mage Origin) doesn't increase in level. He's not bad at range, though.

I mean, yeah, I'll have Alistair and all that, but I'll leave him in camp as much as possible...

I like how the OP covers his basis by using both rogue and rouge.

It's 'bases', not 'basis'.

Note that if you simply turn off auto levelling of npcs you can give Daveth lockpicking (you only need one level of that for all the stuff in the wilds). Helpful if you're not a rogue (or a rouge) yourself. This will also allow you to set up your companions in the way you want from the beginning, putting points and skills where you want them. So you can use Zevran or Leliana for lockpicking (depending on who you want in your party). And if you make a mistake, or change your mind, and you're using a pc - use the respec mod to reset them.

Umm...Daveth doesn't get any XP. Ever. At all. Under any circumstances.

I suspect Death's granddaughter is referring to a mod that doesn't auto-level your companions when you get them. (Ser Gilmore, for example, has no attribute or talent points allocated when you get him.)

No, there's a mod where you can level companions yourself.

I use this mod from the time it was created and it is one of the most useful.

I use the mod where it allows you to go directly from the origin story to you killing the Archdemon...I use it everytime - it makes the game SUPER easy....

No. I know there's a "respec mod" where you can get a ring or something that lets you reset your attribute/talents. I'm talking about the "no follower auto-level" that never assigns the points in the first place. When Daveth joins you at level 6, he's a level 6 rogue with nothing assigned.

Edit: Whoa, ninja'd.

Daveth may not level or have any lockpicking skills but that doesn't mean he cannot pick any locks.  He's capable of picking most of the chests in the ostegar camp which is very useful if the player character is not a rogue but still wants access to, say, the chest near alistar that often has multiple runes in it.  His skills are quite limited, though, there's no doubt about that.  Also, since he's not technically able to gain experience, I belive when he picks locks there is no XP reward.

This is a good point. Lockpicking is based on Cunning, and all the skill does is give +10/rank towards it. So he's not entirely useless.

The salesman in lothering is selling rouge.  You can buy some and have Morrigan put it on.  If Alistair is a love interest sometimes he'll put some on too.  Next pick up Leliana in lothering.  Then you can have the deadly combination of a rogue wearing rouge!

Okay, first lemme just say, there is a mod that lets you not auto-level companions. It doesn't give you extra points, super uber powers or anything, it just lets you assign the points where you like. I have it, I use it.

Second, there are several respec mods (a different thing), I recommend to you not the ring one but the Character Respec v1.6 (available on this very site). It places a raven at various places ingame, including the camp, where you can do several things. One is: get a potion from it. Only one potion at a time, but you can go and get them as many times as you like. Drink the potion, and all your points are 'given back' and you can change your build, putting them in the 'right' place - as often as you like until you're happy. Or you can have a companion drink the potion (though not in camp) and do the same for them. Do you want to include Sten in your party cause he's cute/cool/nasty, but you want to use a 2handed weapon - change him to a tank! Do you want Morrigan cause she's got a cute bum and Wynne is preachy, but you want a spirit healer/arcane warrior in your party? Go to town! Do what you want. Mix it up. Have some fun. [Disclaimer: you can't change class, only specialisation and skills/talents/spells. It doesn't magically give you extra points, only lets you redistribute them.]

Edit: Further disclaimer: only of use to pc users.:P
