Battle reports confirm that the Volus have indeed joined the war efforts against the Reapers.

What do you think about having this new race available?

Yeah, i'm never going to get one of these guys, and they somehow have more technical expertise than salarians and quarians, which makes no sense. They can't take cover and are pretty squishy.
Plus the volus haven't done squat against the main enemy of the game, Cerberus. Or Reapers, the volus do NOTHING. They don't even show up at the end.

Might as well include the captured yahg from the stg bases as a new class, makes just as much sense.

It's awesome to see Volus in game, but it's potentially awful to unlock them. I'd rather pay for new DLC and have all of the characters immediately available than have to grind for money that may or may not get me the character I want. As someone who mostly plays with PUGs, it is ridiculously frustrating to find a decent team that I can grind with and it takes way too much time to unlock the characters, not to mention weapons and other upgrades.

Then they get less money.
Microtransactions man. Sa'll bout the money.

It bears repeating that there are TWICE as many Volus as there are Salarians. How anyone can consider this lore friendly, and how Bioware can promote this idea is beyond me.

Mass Effect 4- Salarians removed from the Council for not supporting the war effort. Volus take their place. Volus join the Spectre ranks.

As far as I remember the lore, there are very, VERY few salarian biotics which are mostly used in scientific works, so no Adepts/Vanguards/Sentinels (at most - a non-biotic Sentinel like N7 Paladin). And a salarian Soldier... I can't imagine such a thing. Two most badassful salarians we know, Mordin and Kirrahe, are Engineer and Infiltrator respectively.

Speaking of the volus... I love this little funny ball of an Engineer.

Because there are so many Volus biotics, right?

Oh wait. There aren't any. The only example we have, the "Biotic God" is a bowling ball hopped up on Red Sand. If you actually let him go and face the Eclipse in ME2, he gets pretty reliably just shredded. His Warp was the equivalent of a light breeze.

He's a joke character, from a joke race.

And before you say anything:
Look at the classes we're getting this time around.
We're getting an Asari Infiltrator, with Warp and Dark Channel.
If we can get that, then there's no reason at all for people to complain about Sentinels like the N7 Paladin (By the way: He's not the only "non-biotic Sentinel". Vorcha and Krogan both are missing biotic abilities as well, instead having Cluster and Lift Grenades respectively as their biotic abilities) having double tech abilities.

I think the volus is a great character. Cannot wait to get mine! Funny playing against collectors on first day of dlc and laughed the whole time at one of my friend's volus characters. Great creative fun idea Bioware.

I didn’t like the idea of the Volus when I heard about it. The lore against their species making a meaningful contribution in an actual single combat zone is fairly daunting, and requires more explanation than ‘they’ve got suits’ to balance out. (Really, if they can make advanced suits, why not give them to existing combatants to boost their abilities?)  There are also few examples in the games themselves as Volus being introduced as anything more than comic relief type characters, so I don’t grasp the fascination with them as a species; MP already had a decent balance of some funny characters and serious ones who made sense as frontline combatants.

The way you’ve handled them so far has been fairly positive (not sure how the Vanguard will work at all) and probably about as well as it could be done. They still seem suspiciously powerful and less frail than expected for a race that’s repeatedly described as being useless in combat unless they’re piloting ships or something. I dislike the Volus less now than when I first heard about them, but I’d still prefer they weren’t in the MP side, and that some other under-represented race was given a support role.

I think a question you should be asking the forum is to what extent lore matters in MP. There seem to be a bunch of people like myself who still care about it, and others who think it’s totally irrelevant. I also think attitudes on that drive a lot of the respones to the inclusion of Volus.

Anyways, thanks for all the MP updates. We do appreciate them quite a bit, even if we attack parts we dislike a bit vehemently at times.

You still believe in the lore? After everything? Thats some belief you have there friend.
But yeah, it doesn't make any sense for there to be volus, its why i don't really like it. especially since if they're shot, they die, they need high pressure suits after all, they're in danger more than quarians.

But if Volus are there i don't really see why Yahg MP classes aren't a thing. They're smart, so they can definitely be soldiers and they but the krogan to shame in terms of strength and survivability. I still remember the Shadow Broker tossing half a desk at Grunt and knocking him out for a good five minutes. Plus the Salarians captured quite a few, many escaped, so why not somehow convince them to join up?
They could be the anti volus. Massive shields and health, but can't take cover(too big) and also can't be sync killed(Except by the atlas). Give them a rage style power and regular other powers and they'd be a great addition and help balance things out against the considerably powered up enemies.

It's great to see that people removed their judgemental classes and saw the Volus as a decent support character. The style is revolved around increasing survivability (shield boost), choking (stasis and rapid biotic detonations), and manoeuvring (mini-tactical cloak). I'm honestly having fun with this guy, especially as I can serve as a the team medic as well. Stasis any stragglers, cloak, run, revive, shield boost for ally, cloak, stasis, etc. :)

dont use the volus as a freakin support character, volus engineer is a straight up badass killer. until drell infiltrator comes out

on another note, are phantoms supposed to not sync kill volus. i played a lot against collectors and recently played cerberus and in 4 games i got the sync kill animation from phantoms, then i went to the bleeding out screen. i just popped a medigel and got up. think this might be a bug

Volus don't make the suits themselves, they buy them from whatever contractor able to meet their specifications. (*cough* Elkoss Combine *cough*) The same goes for those wonderful mines, I assume.

As a Slayer user I found him very helpful with his shield boost and unusual power for both adept and engineer (I haven't unlocked engineer but twice or adept...) but make them as UR is a little bit... I don't know do they deserve as UR. But I'm really interested if Volus Vanguard come. Can't imagine what they can do.
Btw, I think we need to add some xp reward when we generate extra shield to others, like geth turret shield restore and Volus' shield boost as well as reviving teammates. Some characters are great support units but they hardly score XP from damaging enemies...

The whole galaxy is at war. Volus are no exception. But I don't like the idea of Adept, and definitely NO VANGUARD. Please, Bioware. If you still can, please change Vanguard to Infiltrator. Volus will never charge an enemy, you no that. Only if using Red Sand.

Actually with biotic orbs Volus Vanguard could charge more often then other vangurad and his shield boost should able to keep him alive... Maybe he'll be some kind of anti-stomper. But I can't say anything before his release. (<-WHYYY???)

Personally I'm amused by the addition of the Volus, and have no issues with them lore-wise (I'm still hoping for the Prothean biotic to be coming at the end of this 16 character rollout!), however, while I don't care that they're UR (again, I assumed a Prothean would be UR simply to keep the numbers of playable Protheans down for lore complaints), but the fact that there are 4 of them, and thus potentially 4 ultra rare characters, is a little disconcerting. I'm trying hard to level up my UR guns (PPR and Talon, Harrier in 3rd, to be specific), and the idea that I can now get an UR in one of my rare slots that ISN'T a weapon is a little rough. It might be cool if there were some type of divided rarity (perhaps one slot that CAN'T have a character card?), or perhaps a pack which increases probability of getting weapons or characters?

Either way, the one thing I can't complain about, is the fantastic gameplay designs behind the more recent characters. Ever since the Batarians came out, I've been continually more and more impressed by what has been done with the new rare kits. The Vorcha are fantastic, the N7 humans are all amazing, and so far I've really liked what I've seen from Retaliation.

I don't mind the addition of the two current kits due to the fact that they play quite differently because of their size etc and are very support oriented, but a vanguard volus seems very out of place. I think the two current kits would have been sufficient, and would rather have had more salarians or other 'serious' races, or human kits, than more volus.

Also, I really find the idea of ultra-rare characters annoying (unless they are much more prevalent than UR weapons), since they could take forever to unlock for the more casual gamers.

I could not agree more with BioticArm, the Volus is very well "rounded" as a supportive character.  I did  not level up my shield boost as i focused on the orbs and cloak.
